AIKEN, S.C. – Clemson won the team title and Virginia's Ben Kohles claimed individual medalist honors at the 15th Annual Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate at the 6,617-yard par-70 Palmetto Golf Club.
The Tigers at 854 (286-285-283) ended the three-round tournament one stroke ahead of second-place team Virginia (292-278-285). South Carolina obtained third place with a cumulative three-round team tally of 863 (286-284-293).
Virginia's Kohles and Clemson's Crawford Reeves entered the third and final round on Tuesday tied for first. Playing in the same group on the final day of the event, Kohles (69-70-69=208) narrowly edged out Reeves by posting a 69 in the final round. Reeves (69-70-70=209) carded a 70 in round three.
Virginia's Ben Rusch finished third individually at 212 (74-69-69).
Kohles has now won the Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate in two of the last three years. He also garnered individual medalist honors in the 2010 Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate with a score of 204 (70-63-72). The win in the 15th Annual Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate allows Kohles to become Virginia's all-time wins leader, as he now has six individual wins in his career.
Nationally 15th-ranked USC Aiken finished the 15th Annual Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate in a tie for 12 with Presbyterian at 896. After posting back-to-back team scores of 295 in the first two rounds, USC Aiken closed out its home event with a 306 in round three.
USC Aiken's JP Solis (Morelia, Mexico/Lico Morelia) claimed his second straight top-25 finish in the event by ending his efforts tied for 25th at 219 (74-71-74).
USC Aiken will next compete in the Magnolia Invitational at the Orangeburg Country Club in Orangeburg, S.C. The 54-hole tournament hosted by Newberry will be contested on Monday, Mar. 12 and Tuesday, Mar. 13.
