Burkett Blast Sends Pacers to PBC Split With Lander

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

GREENWOOD, S.C. – Behind a Victoria Burkett solo home run in extra innings in game two, the University of South Carolina Aiken softball team split a Peach Belt Conference doubleheader with Lander on Saturday afternoon at Doug Spears Field.

Lander (21-21, 3-11 PBC) acquired a 3-0 win in game one before USC Aiken (20-10, 9-5 PBC) picked up a 2-1 10-inning victory in game two.

USC Aiken after its second game win is now 4-0 in extra-inning contests this season.

Lander scored the only three runs in its first game win in the bottom of the fifth inning.

India Kornegay (Eufaula, Ala./Eufaula HS) suffered the loss for USC Aiken in the first game. Kornegay fanned four in the contest.

Kelsey Davis (4-2) earned the win for Lander in game one.

Lander out-hit USC Aiken, 6-4, in game one. Kaitlyn White (Columbia, S.C./College of Charleston) claimed two of USC Aiken's four hits in the contest.

Brittney Sheriff was the only Bearcat with multiple hits in game one with two.

In game two, USC Aiken arrived on the scoreboard first in the top of the third inning when Burkett (Gilbert, S.C./Gilbert HS) scored on a wild pitch.

The score would remain 1-0 in favor of the Pacers until the bottom of the sixth inning when Lander scored a run to even things up at 1-all.

Burkett would then blast the solo home run in the top of the 10th to lead USC Aiken to the 2-1 victory.

Lander threatened in the bottom of the 10th by loading the bases with no outs. The Pacers would nevertheless find a way to get out of the jam to preserve its one-run extra-inning win.

Kornegay (16-8) claimed the win in the circle for USC Aiken in game two. She pitched the final five innings of the game in relief of starter Samantha Lemm.

Both Kornegay and Lemm (Berlin, N.J./Eastern HS) struck out three in their five innings in the circle in game two.

Hayley Leissner took the loss in the second game for Lander. She is now 11-12 on the year.

Brandy Bossle (North East, Md./Rising Sun HS) was the only Pacer with multiple hits in game two. She was 2-for-4.

Sheriff and Jaime Presnell were 3-for-5 at the dish for Lander in game two.

Lander owned a 10-6 advantage in hits in game two.

Due to inclement weather in the Dahlonega, Ga. area, USC Aiken's scheduled league doubleheader with North Georgia on Sunday, April 1 has been postponed until Saturday, April 14.

The Pacers will now next close a 10-game road swing in Jefferson City, Tenn. against Carson-Newman on Tuesday, April 3. The doubleheader is slated to commence at 3 p.m.

USC Aiken will then welcome rival Augusta State to JH Satcher Field on Thursday, April 5. The twinbill is scheduled to get underway at 4 p.m. on April 5.

It is one of two home doubleheaders for the Pacers on the week, as USC Aiken will welcome non-conference foe Pfeiffer to JH Satcher Field one day later on Friday, April 6. The doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.
