Box Score 2 AIKEN, S.C. – The University of South Carolina Aiken
softball team split a Peach Belt Conference doubleheader with
national No. 25 Columbus State on Sunday afternoon at JH Satcher
Field.
USC Aiken (13-9, 4-4 PBC) picked up a 2-0 victory in game one
before falling 13-2 in game two.
The doubleheader split came on Law Enforcement Appreciation Day
at JH Satcher Field. The special Law Enforcement Appreciation Day
was held to show support for the brave local men and women who
serve in law enforcement.
The score was tied at 0-0 until the bottom of the sixth inning
in game one.
The Pacers began the inning with Brandy Bossle
(North East, Md./Rising Sun HS) being walked. Kaitlyn White
(Columbia, S.C./College of Charleston) then singled down the left
field line to place runners at first and second with no
outs.
Whitney
Clary (Newberry, S.C./Newberry HS) then did what one would
expect from the school's all-time leader in sacrifice hits, as she
sacrificed next to place two runners in scoring position for the
Pacers.
Kayla
Denham (Palatka, Fla./Daytona State College) then took
advantage of the situation by singling in both White and Bossle to
give the Pacers the 2-0 lead that they would never relinquish.
India
Kornegay (Eufaula, Ala./Eufaula HS) would then strike out two
of the four batters she faced in the seventh to secure her second
consecutive shutout victory. She fanned eight and allowed just two
hits in her complete game win.
Kornegay (12-7) now has 142 strikeouts in the 2012 season. The
142 strikeouts leave her with 361 in her career. She is 29
strikeouts away from overtaking Stacie Oakley (2005-06) for third
all-time in school history. Oakley ended her Pacer career with 389
strikeouts.
USC Aiken in total out-hit Columbus State, 5-2, in game one.
Denham was the only player on either team to finish with
multiple hits in game one. She was 2-for-3 with two RBIs.
Columbus State's Mollie Russell suffered the loss in the circle
in game one. She struck out seven in the game.
Columbus State (21-11, 2-2 PBC) out-hit USC Aiken, 16-4, in game
two.
Morgan Knight led Columbus State in the second game with three
hits.
USC Aiken will next travel to Laurinburg, N.C. for a
non-conference doubleheader with St. Andrews on Friday, Mar. 23.
The first game of the doubleheader is scheduled to get underway at
2 p.m.
