Pacers Knock Off Hurricanes Twice on Saturday

AIKEN, S.C. – The University of South Carolina Aiken softball team picked up a thrilling Peach Belt Conference doubleheader sweep of Georgia Southwestern on Saturday at JH Satcher Field.

USC Aiken (12-8, 3-3 PBC) garnered a 1-0 victory in 11 innings in game one before taking a 6-5 victory over Georgia Southwestern (10-16, 0-6 PBC) in game two.

The game still even at 0-0 in game one entering the bottom of the 11th, the Pacers quickly had two outs in the inning before Lindsey Jones (North Augusta, S.C./North Augusta HS) was able to get on base via an error.

Jones then stole second and promptly advanced to third on a passed ball.

Another error then allowed Jones to come home for the 1-0 Pacer win.

USC Aiken pitcher India Kornegay allowed just two hits in game one. She entered the top of the 10th with a no-hitter.

Kornegay (Eufaula, Ala./Eufaula HS) fanned 11 in the Pacer extra-inning win to move to 11-7 on the season in the circle.

In a true pitcher's duel, Georgia Southwestern's Jessica Martin (5-5) allowed just three hits in her loss in the circle in game one. 

Both teams were able to find their bats in game two with Georgia Southwestern slightly out-hitting the Pacers in the second game, 9-6. 

The game started with USC Aiken taking a 5-1 lead after just one inning. The Pacers would add just one more run over the course of the game to hold on for the one-run win.

Kelley King (Chesterfield, S.C./Chesterfield HS) was the only Pacer to record multiple hits in the second game with two. 

Jessica Chewning and Mason Moreland claimed six of Georgia Southwestern's nine hits in game two with each ending the game with three hits. 

Samantha Lemm (Berlin, N.J./Eastern HS) earned the win in the circle for USC Aiken in game two. She is now 1-1 on the year. 

Brittny Dennison suffered the loss in the circle in game two. She is now 0-6 in 2012.

USC Aiken softball will be holding a special Law Enforcement Appreciation Day tomorrow at JH Satcher Field.

The special Law Enforcement Appreciation Day is being held to show support for the brave local men and women who serve in law enforcement.

USC Aiken will be playing host to Columbus State for a Peach Belt Conference doubleheader on Sunday. The first game is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. The second game will commence shortly after the conclusion of game one at approximately 4 p.m.

All law enforcement personnel and their families will get into the games for free by showing their badges/identification. 

Free wristbands will also be given out that say "Heroes Live Forever."

Donations will be collected throughout the course of the doubleheader for a memorial sign in honor of the fallen officers that will be hung in the Convocation Center.

Fallen Public Safety Officer Scotty Richardson's sons will be throwing out the first pitch on Sunday.
