Pacer Tennis Teams Open 2012 Spring Campaign With Victories Over Young Harris

AIKEN, S.C. – The University of South Carolina Aiken tennis teams commenced their 2012 spring campaigns on Saturday with impressive victories over future Peach Belt Conference foe Young Harris.

The regionally 10th-ranked USC Aiken men's tennis team acquired an 8-1 win over Young Harris (2-3), while the Pacer women picked up a 6-3 win over the Mountain Lions.

The regionally-ranked Pacer men swept the doubles competition on Saturday with the tandem of Guilherme Destefani (Bauru, Brazil/Colegio Objetivo) and Lucas Gobbi (Santa Bárbara d'Oeste, Brazil/Colegio Politec) obtaining the largest win for the Pacers in doubles with an 8-2 win over Young Harris' Gabriel Oliveira and Keon Gottenbos at No. 2 doubles.

The USC Aiken men (1-0) were able to secure victory in five of the six singles matches with Destefani, Patrick Stiebinger (Weiden, Germany/Wichita State University), Bruno Orlandini (Araraquara, SP, Brazil/Longwood), Gobbi and Josh Rees (Torquay, England/Torquay Boy's Grammar School) all collecting wins.

USC Aiken's women's tennis team claimed the win in two of the three doubles matches with the Pacers picking up wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles. The doubles tandem of Manon Hermens (Bordeaux, France/Universitè de Bordeaux) and Gina Kothari (Leicester, England/Dixie Grammar School) bested Young Harris' Katie Bryant and Stormy Dvorak, 8-1, at No. 3 doubles, while Margot Simon (Nantes, France/St. Joseph de Loquidy) and Andrea Cediel (Cali, Colombia/Cypress Bay High School) downed Charlotte Moreau and Lina Parrra Pava of Young Harris (3-2), 8-2, at No. 2 doubles.

USC Aiken (1-0) acquired a win in four of the six singles matches with Simon, Cediel, Shauna Williams (Columbia, S.C./Broward Community College) and Julie Maline (Amiens, France/Lycée Louis Thuillier) all picking up singles victories. 

The Pacer tennis teams were scheduled to face off against Pfeiffer on Sunday, Feb. 5 in Misenheimer, N.C., but the matches were cancelled due to the threat of inclement weather on Sunday.

USC Aiken's men's and women's tennis teams will next travel to Anderson, S.C. to take on Anderson at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 11.
