Late-Inning Rally Not Enough for Pacers in Extra-Inning Loss to Georgia College

Box Score

AIKEN, S.C. – The nationally 29th-ranked University of South Carolina Aiken baseball team rallied back from a seven-run deficit, but in the end they would not be able to overcome Georgia College in a 10-8 12-inning Peach Belt Conference loss to the Bobcats on Sunday afternoon at Roberto Hernandez Stadium.

The loss in the rubber game of the series gives the Pacers their first three-game series loss of the 2012 season.

After scoring its first run of the game in the bottom of the seventh, USC Aiken (8-4, 3-3 PBC) was down 8-1 entering the bottom of the eighth frame.

The Pacers would put a seven-spot on the board in the bottom half of the inning to tie the game at 8-all.

USC Aiken, which entered the eighth inning with only three hits, scored all seven of its run in the eighth with two outs.

Pacer pinch-hitter Will Tankersley (Thomson, Ga./Thomson) put the punctuation on the seven-run inning by blasting a two-run home run to score the final two runs of the eighth for USC Aiken and tie the game at 8-8.

The Pacers would have their chances to take the lead over the next few innings, but Georgia College (9-6, 2-1 PBC) would plate two in the top of the 12th to garner the 10-8 victory.

Georgia College concluded its win on Sunday barely out-hitting the Pacers, 13-12.

Two Pacers ended their day with multiple hits with Stephen Carmon (Camden, S.C./Camden) leading the way for USC Aiken. He was 3-for-6 with one run scored.

JJ Loker (Elkton, Va./Spotswood) with two hits was the only other Pacer to pick up more than one hit.

Tanner Funk with four hits and Cody Maas with three hits paced the Bobcats. Maas had two home runs in the contest.

One of seven pitchers on the day for USC Aiken, Jake Padgett (Gilbert, S.C./Gilbert) suffered the loss in one inning on the hill. He struck out two, but allowed the two game-winning runs.

Georgia College's Matt Lamothe pitched the final 4.1 innings to pick up his first win of the year for the Bobcats. He fanned four Pacers.

USC Aiken will next welcome CSRA rival Paine to the 'Bert for a 4 p.m. game on Wednesday, Feb. 29.
