Box Score 2 SALISBURY, N.C. – The University of South Carolina Aiken
softball team opened its 2012 campaign with an impressive sweep of
Catawba on Saturday afternoon at Whitley Field.
USC Aiken (2-0) picked up a 4-1 win over Catawba (8-4) in the
first game before pulling away for a 10-1 victory in the second
game.
USC Aiken will begin its 2012 home campaign with two consecutive
doubleheaders.
The first Pacer home twinbill of the year will feature USC Aiken
squaring off against Queens on Sunday, Feb. 19. The two programs
will open the doubleheader at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 19.
Game One (USC Aiken 4, Catawba 1)
Preseason All-Peach Belt Conference selection India Kornegay
(Eufaula, Ala./Eufaula HS) dominated in the circle in the first
game victory.
Kornegay ended her efforts in the Pacers' first game win with 14
strikeouts. She allowed just two hits.
Two Pacers recorded multiple hits in the first game victory with
Kayla
Denham (Palatka, Fla./Daytona State College) and Hillary Stewart
(Blythewood, S.C./Blythewood HS) both notching two hits.
Denham was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored overall in
the first game.
The Pacers out-hit Catawba, 9-2, in game one.
Emily B. Huneycutt suffered her first loss of the year in the
circle in the Pacer win. She pitched 5.2 innings. Huneycutt allowed
nine hits.
Denham got things going in the first game for USC Aiken by
blasting a home run to left centerfield in her first at-bat of the
year in the top of the first inning.
USC Aiken would add another run in the top of the fourth when Cortney
Sadler (Bradenton, Fla./State College of Fla.,
Manatee-Sarasota) belted a home run of her own to left field.
The Pacers would tack on two more runs in the top of the sixth
before Catawba claimed its only run of the game in the bottom of
the frame.
Game Two (USC Aiken 10, Catawba 1)
Denham was 2-for-4 with four RBIs, two runs scored and one home
run in total in game two. She was one of three Pacers to collect
multiple hits in game two, as Whitney Clary and
Sadler both recorded two hits in game two.
Clary (Newberry, S.C./Newberry HS) was 2-for-3 with two runs
scored and an RBI. Sadler picked up an RBI.
USC Aiken out-hit Catawba, 10-2, in game two.
Kornegay pitched the final three innings to claim the win in the
second game. Kornegay fanned five in her three innings in the
circle.
