AIKEN, S.C. - University of South Carolina Aiken women's basketball player Kayla Harris has been named the USC Aiken Athletic Department Student-Athlete of the Month for her efforts in the month of November.
The preseason All-American closed out USC Aiken's first four games of the 2012-13 season averaging a team-best 18.8 points and 7.3 rebounds per game to go along with 3.8 assists per game. She finished the four games shooting 52.1 percent (25-for-48) from the field.
Harris knocked down 86.2 percent (25-of-29) of her free throw attempts during the month of November.
The junior from Raleigh, N.C. scored in double figures in all four Pacer wins. She opened the year by claiming a double-double with 23 points and 10 rebounds in USC Aiken's victory over Florida Southern on Nov. 10.
Harris (Raleigh, N.C./Wakefield HS) then posted 13 points, eight rebounds and five assists in a Pacer win over current national No. 23 Wingate on Nov. 14. Harris claimed 15 points and seven rebounds in USC Aiken's win over Catawba on Nov. 17.
Harris closed out USC Aiken's dominating victory over Florida Tech on Nov. 25 with 24 points, four rebounds, four assists, one steal and one block. She was a perfect 7-for-7 from the field in the game. Harris knocked down 10 of her 12 free throw attempts in the contest.
Harris and the nationally fifth-ranked USC Aiken women (4-0) will next close out their season-opening five-game homestand by welcoming Benedict (2-2) to the Convocation Center for a 5:30 p.m. game on Saturday, Dec. 1. The contest will be City League Basketball Night at the Convocation Center with all basketball players from the area wearing their jerseys admitted to the game free of charge.
The USC Aiken-Benedict game will be sponsored by South Point Construction and The Smith Group.
The USC Aiken Athletic Department Student-Athlete of the Month award honors one student-athlete each month from an in-season sport for their hard work and effort. Each month during the 2012-13 athletic year one winner will be chosen from an in-season sport.
