USC Aiken Drops Heartbreaker to Fifth-Ranked Flagler in Overtime

Box Score

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – Nationally fifth-ranked Flagler garnered a narrow 3-2 overtime victory over the University of South Carolina Aiken men's soccer team in Peach Belt Conference men's soccer action on Wednesday evening at Saints Field.

USC Aiken (3-3-2, 1-3 PBC) arrived on the scoreboard just 2:25 into the match when a Flagler own goal went into the back of the net off a Saint defender for a 1-0 Pacer advantage.

Flagler (8-1-1, 6-0-0 PBC) would even the game at 1-1 in the 35th-minute when Joseph Toby scored off an assist from Marco Warren.

Toby placed the Saints on top, 2-1, just over four minutes after the halftime break. He was assisted on the goal by Zach Shanahan.

Another own goal by Flagler in the 70th-minute would allow the Pacers to even the game at 2-2.

Neither team would find a goal the rest of regulation, sending the game into overtime.

In the first overtime period, Toby looked to be claiming a hat trick, but his penalty kick was saved by USC Aiken goalkeeper Joshua Poissant (Windsor Locks, Conn./Windsor Locks HS) in the 97th-minute.

Despite Poissant's dramatic penalty kick save, Flagler would score the game-winning goal in the 99th-minute when Marco Padilla scored off an assist from Jonny Cosgrove.

Flagler ended its narrow win over USC Aiken with a 20-10 shot advantage. Each team had nine corner kicks in the match.

Noel Mais (Atlanta, Ga./Kingston College) led USC Aiken with four shots. Poissant made seven saves in the contest.

USC Aiken will next close out its week with a 6 p.m. home game at the "Pacer Pit" against Erskine on Saturday, Oct. 6.
