Box Score AIKEN, S.C. – The University of South Carolina Aiken women's soccer team was able to score twice in the second half, but in the end their efforts for a victory on Senior Day at the "Pacer Pit" fell just short in a 3-2 Peach Belt Conference loss to UNC Pembroke.
Regionally-ranked UNC Pembroke (9-5-3, 5-4-1 PBC) scored the first goal of the match in the 27th-minute when Brittany Padilla scored off a corner kick by Amalia Arvidsson.
The Pacers evened things up in the match just over six minutes into the second stanza. The goal materialized when Megan Smits (Manassas, Va./Stonewall Jackson HS) scored off a rebound from a Jenny Pineiro (Charleston, S.C./Fort Dorchester HS) shot.
UNC Pembroke would go ahead once again in the 61st-minute when Fanny Forsman scored on a penalty kick.
The Pacers squared things once again in the 71st-minute when Taylor Simmons (North Charleston, S.C./Fort Dorchester HS) scored her first goal of the season. Simmons' goal came off a double assist from Kyle Maguire (Irmo, S.C./Dutch Fork HS) and Smits. Maguire started the eventual Pacer goal by playing a long ball from just over the half-line that was then flicked on to Simmons by Smits. Simmons took advantage of her chance to tie the game at 2-2.
Julia Nytorp collected the game-winning goal for UNC Pembroke in the 73rd-minute.
USC Aiken (4-10-3, 3-6-1 PBC) ended its loss to UNC Pembroke owning a 24-13 shot advantage. The Pacers owned a slight 7-5 advantage in corner kick opportunities.
USC Aiken will next close out its 2012 regular season on the road in Dahlonega, Ga. on Saturday, Oct. 27 against Peach Belt Conference foe North Georgia. Kick-off is set for 5 p.m.
