USC Aiken Continues Winning Ways in 76-54 Victory Over Augusta State

AIKEN, S.C. – The University of South Carolina Aiken men's basketball team continued its winning ways against rival Augusta State at the Convocation Center with a 76-54 home victory over the Jaguars on Monday evening.

USC Aiken has claimed all of the regular season games between the two in the series since the opening of the Convocation Center prior to the start of the 2007-08 season. The Pacers are now 5-0 at home during the regular season against Augusta State.

According to USC Aiken and Augusta State athletic records, Monday's 22-point Pacer win is also the most dominant win by either team in the all-time series.

USC Aiken (12-2, 6-0 PBC) has now won 11 of its last 12 games. The Pacers have won four in a row.

The Pacers and Jaguars played closed the entire first half with the score knotted at 25-all with 3:40 left in the first stanza.

USC Aiken would then close the half on a 7-3 run to take a 32-28 lead in the halftime break. 

The Pacers took over for good in the opening minutes of the second half. USC Aiken commenced the second half on a 19-2 run to take a commanding 51-30 lead with 14:36 left in the second half.

USC Aiken would eventually go up by as many as 25 in the second half before acquiring the 22-point win over Augusta State (8-7, 4-3 PBC).

The 76 points scored by the Pacers in the game was the most allowed by Augusta State this season. The 54 points Augusta State scored in the contest was also its fewest point total of the year. 

A lot of USC Aiken's success in the victory on Monday can be attributed to the Pacers forcing Augusta State into 20 turnovers. USC Aiken advantageously scored 27 points off the Jaguar miscues.

Both teams concluded Monday's game shooting 42.9 percent. USC Aiken hit 24 of its 56 shot attempts in the game as a team, whiled Augusta State knocked down 18 of its 42 shots as a team in the contest.

The two teams were equally strong from the free throw line. USC Aiken shot 76.9 percent (20-for-26) from the charity stripe, while Augusta State hit 73.3 percent (11-for-15) of its free throw attempts. 

The Jaguars held a slight edge from beyond the arc where they were seven for 13 (53.8 percent). USC Aiken hit eight of its 19 (42.1 percent) 3-point attempts. 

Four Pacers finished in double figures with Sterling Council (Camden, S.C./Camden) leading the way with 17 points. He also had four assists. One of the best free throw shooters in the country continued his stout shooting at the charity stripe in the game, going a perfect 8-for-8. 

Jesse Seilern (Innsbruck, Austria/Kapfenberg) finished Monday's win over Augusta State with 12 points, three rebounds, and two assists. 

Re'mon Nelson (Columbus, Ohio/Canal Winchester) finished with 11 points and four assists for the Pacers in the game, while Joel Gierbolini (Carolina, Puerto Rico /Long Island) ended his efforts with 10 points and seven rebounds.

Devon Wright-Nelson led three Augusta State players in double figures with 14 points.

USC Aiken will next travel to Pembroke, N.C. for an East Division contest with current division No. 2 UNC Pembroke, who is 5-1 in league action in the 2011-12 season. The Pacers and Braves will tip off at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 18.
