Box Score AIKEN, S.C. – The University of South Carolina Aiken Men's
Soccer team shook off an early deficit by scoring two goals over a
three-minute span in the latter minutes of the first half to defeat
non-conference foe Brevard on Wednesday evening at the "Pacer
Pit."
Brevard (0-3) scored the first goal of the game when Tommi
Rasinmaki was able to convert a penalty kick at the 32:27 mark.
USC Aiken (2-2) would not let the Tornados keep any momentum
from their goal as Scott Newby
(Leicestershire, United Kingdom/Wreake Valley) sparked a Pacer
comeback effort that eventually led to a one-goal Pacer win.
Newby set up the first goal by taking on basically the entire
Tornado defense. Receiving the ball just past the half-line off a
turnover, Newby shredded by numerous defenders on his way to the
Brevard 18-yard box. Once there, he was able to deftly leave the
ball for Michael Ardrey
(Augusta, Ga./Richmond Academy), who then promptly took advantage
by slotting the ball into the lower right corner to tie the game at
1-1.
Ardrey's first goal of the year came in the
34th-minute.
Just under three minutes later, Newby netted his second goal of
the year when he took a pass from Samuel Korosi
(Columbia, S.C. /Midlands Tech) a few yards outside of the six-yard
box. Newby turned brilliantly to his left foot and then sent the
ball in the right corner of the net for the game-winning goal in
the 37th-minute.
USC Aiken finished with seven more shots than the Tornados in
the game at 20-13. The Pacers held a 7-2 advantage in corner kick
opportunities.
The Pacers' three-match homestand will finish on Saturday, Sept.
10 with USC Aiken commencing Peach Belt Conference action against
North Georgia. Kickoff is slated for 7:30 p.m.
