KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. – Guided by Taylor Welborn's first round 68, the 18^th-ranked University of South Carolina Aiken Golf team is in second place as a team after the first round of the Eighth Annual Kiawah Island Invitational at the 6,875 yard, par 72 Cougar Point Golf Course.

A junior transfer out Darton College, Welborn (LaGrange, Ga./Darton) is currently tied for first individually with Georgia Southwestern's JP Griffin, who also posted a 4-under 68 in round one. Griffin's teammate Craig Gibson is tied for third individually with Belmont Abbey's Matt Foster. Both carded a 3-under 69 in the first round of action.

USC Aiken's Hayden Letien (Sumter, S.C./Sumter), Mark Dickson (Edinburgh, Scotland/Firrhill) and Matt Atkins (Owensboro, Ky./Henderson State) all carded 75s in the first round.

Pacer sophomore Brian Amick (Sumter, S.C./Sumter) finished with a 76, but he produced the highlight of the day when he made a Hole in One on the 223-yard, par 3 12^th hole.

Georgia Southwestern is in first place after the first round of action as a team with a cumulative team tally of 284. The Pacers are in second as a team at 293. St. Andrews is in third place as a team at 294.

The second and final round of the Eighth Annual Kiawah Island Invitational is scheduled to get underway at approximately 7:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 6.
