Gillespie's Two Goals Leads Pacers to 2-1 Road Victory Over Newberry

Box Score

NEWBERRY, S.C. – Freshman Caroline Gillespie scored twice and the University of South Carolina Aiken Women's Soccer Team remained perfect in 2011 with a 2-1 road victory over Newberry.

The 2-1 victory over the Wolves improves USC Aiken to 2-0 on the season. It marks the best start to a season for the Pacers since USC Aiken began the 2005 season 3-0.

USC Aiken was able to score the first goal of the game in the 19th-minute when Gillespie (Greenville, S.C./JL Mann) rocketed in a shot from 20 yards out. The ball went just under the cross bar for Gillespie's first goal as a Pacer.

The goal would be the lone of the first half as the two teams would enter intermission with USC Aiken clinging to a 1-0 advantage.

Almost eight minutes into the second half, Newberry (1-1) acquired the equalizer when Cassie Smith scored off an assist from Megan Douglas.

The Newberry lead would not last long as Gillespie once again blasted a shot in from 25 yards out to give the Pacers a 2-1 lead that they would never relinquish at the 65-minute mark.

Newberry held a slight 13-12 shot advantage in the contest despite the loss. The Pacers took the only corner kick in the match.

The Pacers will next open their 2011 home schedule on Wednesday, Sept. 7 with a 5 p.m. contest against Brevard at the "Pacer Pit." In the first ever meeting between the two programs last season in Brevard, N.C., USC Aiken garnered a 2-1 win.
