Box Score 2 AUGUSTA, Ga. – The University of South Carolina Aiken softball team spilt a Peach Belt Conference doubleheader on Saturday with Augusta State at Jaguar Field.
In two games that took a combined 20 innings to finish, Augusta State (27-13, 8-6) earned a 1-0 eight-inning victory in game one before USC Aiken (24-14, 7-11) garnered a 5-4 12-inning victory in the second game.
In the second game with things all knotted up at 4-4 in the top of the 12th inning, USC Aiken got things going in the frame with Whitney Clary (Newberry, S.C./Newberry) singling to center field. Clary then scored the eventual game-winning run on an error by the Augusta State second baseman.
Augusta State had a chance to tie or take the lead in the bottom of the 12th, but Pacer pitcher Kylee Knop (Oxford, Ga./Kirkwood CC) held the Jaguars at bay in the bottom of the extra frame to improve to 4-7 on the year in the circle.
Knop pitched the final 7.2 innings of the game.
Augusta State's Heather Hughes suffered the loss in the second game to fall to 9-6 overall.
Knop aided her own cause in the second game victory by the Pacers by going 3-for-5 with an RBI. She was one of three Pacers with multiple hits.
Lindsey Jones (North Augusta, S.C./North Augusta) and Clary both had two hits each in the game. Both also scored two runs.
Kristen Jones and Destiny Echols led the Jaguars with each obtaining two hits in the second game.
USC Aiken out-hit Augusta State, 10-7, in game one.
The first game was the epitome of a pitcher's duel with neither team able to find a run until the bottom of the eighth inning.
Echols claimed the run for Augusta State when she doubled in Laura Brown for a 1-0 Augusta State win.
Both teams had three hits each in the first game.
Knop claimed two of USC Aiken's three hits.
India Kornegay (Eufaula, Ala./Eufaula) pitched all 7.2 innings for USC Aiken in the game one loss. She struck out nine, but fell to 12-6 overall on the year with the loss.
Hughes picked up her ninth win of the year in the circle in game one.
USC Aiken will next close out its 2011 regular season with a Peach Belt Conference home doubleheader against Columbus State on Monday, April 11. First pitch in game one from J.H. Satcher Field is set for 2 p.m. The second game will commence shortly after the conclusion of game one.
