Pacers Drop Doubleheader to Bobcats

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

AIKEN, S.C. – Despite opening both games with early leads, the University of South Carolina Aiken softball team (23-13, 6-10 PBC) dropped their Peach Belt Conference doubleheader to the visiting Georgia College Bobcats (14-33, 9-11 PBC) 6-5 and 2-1 Thursday afternoon at J.H. Satcher Field.

In the first game, the Pacers raced out to a sizeable 4-1 lead after four solid innings. However, in the fifth inning Georgia College found their groove, scoring five runs off freshman starter India Kornegay to go ahead 6-4.

USCA was able to get one run back in the bottom of the inning, but they would get no closer as the Bobcats would hold on for the 6-5 upset victory.

Kelley King (Chesterfield, S.C./Chesterfield) led the Pacers' efforts at the plate with a perfect 3-for-3 performance with one run scored and two RBIs. Kayla Denham (Paltka, Fla./Daytona State) turned in a similar perfect performance, going 2-for-2 with one run score and an RBI.

Whitney Clary (Newberry, S.C./Newberry HS) continued to break records, this time breaking the record for most sacrifice hits in a single season by registering her 17th sacrifice hit of the year.

Kornegay (Eufaula, Ala.) suffered the loss in the circle for USCA after striking out just three batters to fall to 12-5 while Chelsie Huffman came in for three and a third innings to record the win and improve to 3-4 in 2011.

The second game saw USCA edge out to an early lead once again, this time holding a 1-0 lead in the second inning when Brittney Williamson (Lexington, S.C./White Knoll) crossed the dish for the first score of the game off the bat of Hillary Stewart.

The Bobcats would answer in the top of the fourth inning to tie the score before claiming the go-ahead run in the top of the seventh inning to claim the win and sweep the important league doubleheader.

Stewart (Blythewood, S.C./Blythewood) led USCA at the plate in the second game going 2-for-3 with the lone RBI.

Kylee Knop (Oxford, Ga./Kirkwood) took the loss in game two for the Pacers, falling to 3-7. Haley Burnett claimed the win for Georgia College to improve 2-14.

USCA will now travel to Augusta, Ga. on Saturday, April 9 for their final road game of the season. The Pacers will take on the Jaguars of rival Augusta State with a 2 p.m. league doubleheader. The second game of the twinbill will get underway shortly after the conclusion of the first game.
