Pacers Unable to End Season With Victory

Box Score

AIKEN, S.C. – Five of the Pacers' nine seniors saw action Saturday afternoon in their final collegiate game within the confines of Roberto Hernandez Stadium, but the University of South Carolina Aiken baseball team (29-21) was unable to close out the 2011 season with a win as the Erskine Flying Fleet (28-23) claimed the Pacers' season finale 6-3 on senior day.

Underclassmen stole the show in the Pacers' efforts as sophomore catcher Josh Miller (Chapin, S.C./Chapin) led the Pacers at the dish going 2-for-2 with an RBI while junior Tyler Bourdo (Evans, Ga./Truett-McConnell) went 1-for-2.

Luke Danielewicz led the fleet out of the hanger with a 2-for-4 performance that included two RBIs and a run scored. He was 3-for-5 for the weekend with three RBIs in the two-game set.

The Flying Fleet scored in two three-run bursts, scoring in the second inning to take the early 3-0 lead and then again in the eighth inning to claim the 6-3 victory.

USC Aiken scored two runs in the bottom of the third inning when Stephen Bellantoni (Oviedo, Fla./Lake Sumter) scored off a sacrifice fly by Kyle Rice (Augusta, Ga./Cross Creek). In a head's up move by the Pacer coaching staff, Stephen Carmon (Camden, S.C./Camden) and Miller then stole home and second respectively after the play before time was called to pull the Pacers within one at 3-2.

USC Aiken was able to knot the score at three-all in the seventh inning when Miller sent a sacrifice fly RBI to left field to score Ballantoni, but the Pacers' charge would fizzle out as the Fleet would take flight and claim the win.

Senior right-handed pitcher Jason Cochcroft (Gilbert, S.C./Gilbert) suffered the loss on the mound in his final game despite pitching well with five batters fanned in seven innings of work. He finishes the season 4-2.

Austin Heflin, the Fleet's fifth pitcher out of the hanger for the day secured his first decision of the season for head coach Kevin Nichols to improve to 1-0. John Bolding came in for the final two innings to secure his third save of the year.
