Pacers Sweep Jaguars to Claim Third Outback Cup

Box Score

AIKEN, S.C. – The University of South Carolina Aiken baseball team (26-18) renewed their rivalry with the Augusta State Jaguars in the second half of the Third Annual Outback Cup, claiming their sixth-straight victory over the Jaguars (20-28) in the non-conference series 6-2 Wednesday evening at Roberto Hernandez Stadium.

The Pacers quickly went up 2-1 early in the contest, but the Jaguars were able to tie the game at two-all in the top of the fifth inning when Tristan Toorie doubled to the wall in left-center field, driving Ross Miles home.

The Pacers would go on from there to shut out the Jaguars and score four runs to claim the victory, with three coming in the sixth inning.

Adam Spires (Gilbert, S.C./Gilbert) spurred USC Aiken's scoring drive by delivering a long-hopping groundball over the Augusta State third baseman's head to drive JJ Loker (Elkton, Va./Spotswood) home from second just before Stephen Bellantoni (Oviedo, Fla./Lake Sumter) smacked the ball up the middle for an RBI single that scored Josh Attaway (Lexington, S.C./Lexington) to put USC Aiken up 4-2.

Reigning Peach Belt Conference Player of the Week Stephen Carmon (Camden, S.C./Camden) recorded his lone RBI on the night with a one-out ground out to the second baseman that scored Spires and put the Pacers up 5-2 heading into the seventh inning.

The Pacers tacked on the final insurance run in the bottom of the eighth inning when Bellantoni sent a sacrifice fly to deep centerfield to score Attaway and put the game out of reach for the Jaguars.

Bellantoni and Tyler Bourdo (Evans, Ga./Truett-McConnell) led the charge for USC Aiken with a pair of 2-for-3 performances at the plate. Bellantoni chipped in two RBIs while Attaway scored twice in the non-conference match-up.

Thomas McLeod (Chapin, S.C./Chapin) recorded the win on the mound for USC Aiken as Kenny Thomas once against utilized the depth of his bullpen by pitching six different hurlers. The plethora of pitchers combined to deal out 10 strikeouts.

Chase Johnston suffered the loss on the hill for Augusta State as Chris Cooper employed a similar strategy for the Jaguars, utilizing six of his own pitchers in the contest.

The Pacers will remain home for the Easter Weekend as they will welcome the Falcons of the University of Montevallo to the 'Bert for their final Peach Belt Conference series of the season. The Pacers and Falcons will get things started on Friday, April 22 with a 4 p.m. doubleheader before they close out USC Aiken's league slate with a single 1 p.m. game on Saturday, April 23
