Four-Run Eighth Inning Helps Pacers Dismount Knights

Box Score

AIKEN, S.C. – Four runs in the bottom of the eighth inning capped a 10-3 win over the Knights of St. Andrews Presbyterian for the University of South Carolina Aiken baseball team Tuesday night at Roberto Hernandez Stadium as the Pacers (23-16) easily dispatched the Knights (8-30).

USC Aiken out-hit St. Andrews 8-4 and capitalized on the Knights' four errors, three of which came during the eighth inning surge.

Tripp Warrick (North Augusta, S.C./North Augusta) had a stellar night at the plate for USC Aiken as he spurred the Pacers to victory with a home run in the second inning. By the end of the contest, Warrick was 3-for-5 with three RBIs and his one run scored.

USC Aiken would go on from there to tally a single run in the fourth and then added two runs in each of the fifth and sixth innings.

Down 6-0, the Knights attempted to mount a come back, notching three runs in the seventh inning. However, USC Aiken would continue to hold their assailants at the gates, and added the additional four runs in the bottom of the eighth inning for insurance to cap the 10-3 non-conference win.

Just behind Warrick, Stephen Bellantoni (Oviedo, Fla./Lake Sumter CC) was 2-for-5 with a single and a double and one run scored. JJ Loker (Elkton, Va./Spotswood) had three RBIs on the night and one run scored while Kyle Rice (Augusta, Ga./Cross Creek) scored three runs.

Taylor Peed (St. Leonard, Md./Calvert) pitched a solid six and two thirds innings to record his first decision of the season striking out six batters.

DJ Turpin pitched five innings, giving up six hits and six runs to fall to 2-1 for the Knights on the mound.

Tomorrow the Pacers will travel to Salisbury, N.C. to take on the Catawba Indians in a 6:30 p.m. non-conference tilt.

USC Aiken will then return home for a weekend Peach Belt Conference series against the Pirates of Armstrong Atlantic State. The three-game set will begin with a single 7 p.m. game on Friday, April 15 and will conclude with a Saturday doubleheader the next day with the first pitch of the first game slated to leave the mound at 2 p.m.
