Pacer Softball Splits League Doubleheader with 22nd-Ranked Saints

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – For the second time in a row, the University of South Carolina Aiken softball team split their Peach Belt Conference doubleheader with the 22nd-ranked Saints of Flagler College Tuesday afternoon at Flagler Softball Field. The Pacers (13-7, 4-4 PBC) claimed the first game 6-5 in eight innings before dropping the second game 3-2 to the nationally-ranked Saints (22-3, 1-1 PBC).

Flagler went up 1-0 in the second inning of the first game before tacking on four more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning before the Pacers could push their first runs across the plate.

In the top of the next inning, three Pacers crossed the dish to keep the game close.

They would score one run in each of the following three innings to claim the 6-5 extra-inning win over the nationally-ranked Saints in game one.

Brandy Bossle (North East, Md./Rising Sun) led the way at the plate for USC Aiken going 3-for-4 at the plate with two runs scored and an RBI.

Samantha Lemm (Berlin, N.J./Eastern) came in during the fourth inning record her third win of the season to remain perfect at 3-0. Fellow freshman India Kornegay (Eufaula, Ala./Eufaula) entered the game in the eighth inning and struck out two batters to record her second save of the year.

In the second game, USC Aiken found itself up 1-0 in the top of the second inning when Nicole Borden (Jacksonville, Fla./Bolles School) crossed the dish, but it would be the last lead the Pacers would enjoy in the game as the Saints got two back off a double by Tori Jolley who had two home runs in the first game. Breezy Collings and Robyn Draper both scored off Jolley's rip to put Flagler up 2-1.

Collings would extend the lead to 3-1 in the bottom of the sixth inning when she ripped a home run.

The Pacers attempted to avoid the split in the seventh when Lauren Locklear (Chraleston, S.C./Wando) scored off a single by Lindsey Joines (North Augusta, S.C./North Augusta) after doubling to reach base. But USC Aiken would not be able to pull off the second win over the 22nd-ranked Saints as Flagler's defense avoided the sweep.

The Saints gave the Pacers plenty of opportunities as they committed four errors to go along with USC Aiken's nine hits in the second game. Bossle once again led the way for USC Aiken as she was 2-for-3 at the plate once more.

Kornegay, this week's PBC Freshman of the Week, fell to 5-3 for the season as she took the loss in the circle, but not without another strong effort as the stellar freshman struck out 14 batters. It is the fifth time this season the Eufuala, Ala. native has struck out more than 10 batters in a contest.

Donna Munafo split the day in the circle for Flagler to improve to 4-1 on the year.

USC Aiken will remain on the road, heading to Savannah, Ga. to take on the Armstrong Atlantic State Pirates on Thursday, March 10. The first game of the league doubleheader is scheduled for 1 p.m.
