USC Aiken Falls Just Short in Bid for First PBC Tournament Title

Box Score

AIKEN, S.C. – The 12th-ranked University of South Carolina Aiken women's basketball team fell just short in its bid to claim its first ever Peach Belt Conference Tournament championship as Georgia College downed the Pacers in the 2011 PBC Tournament Final, 62-49, on Sunday afternoon at the Convocation Center.

Sunday's championship game loss snapped a 10-game winning streak for the Pacers.

The game is not the final of the year for the Pacers. USC Aiken (26-5) is assured of an appearance in the NCAA Division II Tournament and they will learn their opponent in the NCAA Division II Southeast Regional tonight at 9:30 p.m. The NCAA Selection Show will be broadcast live on NCAA.com.

The game tied 45-45 with 6:28 remaining, USC Aiken and Georgia College (22-6) battled scoreless for the next three minutes before USC Aiken obtained its first lead of the game at 47-45 after a Kayla Harris (Raleigh, N.C./Wakefield) jumper with 3:29 remaining.

The Pacer advantage would not last with Georgia College closing the contest on a 17-2 run to claim the PBC Tournament championship.

Peach Belt Conference Tournament Most Valuable Player Chimere Jordan of Georgia College led all scorers in the championship game with 26 points.  She also had 10 rebounds to claim a double-double.

Krysta Lewis was the final Bobcat in double figures with 11.

USC Aiken had two players end the game in double figures with Kayla Harris and Hannah DeGraffinreed (Raleigh, N.C./Merrimack) finishing in double digits with 11 and 10, respectively.

Neither team shot the basketball extremely well in the championship game with Georgia College shooting 34.5 percent (19 for 55) as a squad in its championship game victory. USC Aiken shot 32.6 percent (15 for 46) in the game as a team.

DeGraffinreed and Pacer point guard Triahna Harris (Springfield, Va./West Springfield) were chosen to the PBC All-Tournament team for their efforts over the course of the 2011 league tournament.
