Box Score 2 DUE WEST, S.C. – The University of South Carolina Aiken softball team improved its winning streak to six games with a doubleheader sweep of non-conference foe Erskine on Tuesday afternoon at the EC Softball Complex.
The Pacers (23-11) garnered a 5-1 win in the first game over Erskine (15-12-1) before earning a 2-0 shutout win in game two.
In game one, USC Aiken rushed out to a 3-0 lead in the first two innings of action.
Lauren Locklear (Charleston, S.C./Wando) claimed the first two runs of the game in the top of the first inning when she belted a two-run home run.
In the second inning after a Kylee Knop (Oxford, Ga. /Kirkwood CC) single led things off, Lindsey Jones (North Augusta, S.C./North Augusta) doubled to bring in Jones for a 3-0 Pacer lead.
After allowing a single run to Erskine in the bottom of the fifth, USC Aiken would not score again until the top of the seventh inning. The Pacers plated two in the inning to acquire the four-run win.
Reigning Peach Belt Conference Freshman of the Week India Kornegay (Eufaula, Ala./Eufaula) pitched a gem in the first game.
Kornegay allowed a home run to Ashlyn Hicks for the lone Erskine hit of the game. She fanned eight in the first game.
Knop led three Pacers with multiple hits in a game one victory that saw USC Aiken out-hit the Flying Fleet, 11-1.
Knop was 3-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBIs. Locklear was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a run scored, while Jones was a perfect 2-for-2 with an RBI.
Kornegay once again pitched all seven innings in game two to lead the Pacers to the shutout victory. She fanned six and allowed just three hits. The two wins on Tuesday improved her to 12-4 on the 2011 season.
USC Aiken scored all of its run in the second game win in the top of the third inning. Whitney Clary (Newberry, S.C./Newberry) netted the runs for the Pacers when she doubled in Brandly Bossle (North East, Md./Rising Sun) and Nicole Borden (North East, Md./Rising Sun).
Borden was the only Pacer to record multiple hits in the second game. She was 2-for-2 with a run scored in the Pacer win.
USC Aiken will next welcome Georgia College to J.H. Satcher Field for a Peach Belt Conference doubleheader on Thursday, April 7. The first game of the league twinbill is scheduled for 4 p.m. The second game will begin shortly after the conclusion of game one.
