Box Score MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – The University of South Carolina Aiken opened its three-game series with fifth-ranked Georgia College with a dominating 10-1 victory over the Bobcats in Peach Belt Conference action on Saturday afternoon at John Kurtz Field.
The series was originally scheduled to have a doubleheader on Saturday, but with Georgia College leading 2-1 entering the top of the second inning in the second game inclement weather forced the series to now conclude with a doubleheader on Sunday, March 27.
The Pacers and Bobcats will pick up where they left off in the top of the second inning tomorrow starting at 1 p.m. The second game of Sunday's doubleheader - and the third game of the series - will commence shortly after the conclusion of game one on Sunday.
USC Aiken (17-11, 3-7 PBC) opened its victory over Georgia College (21-8, 6-4 PBC) on Saturday by plating four runs in the top of the first inning.
Teddy Leverett (Evans, Ga./Truett-McConnell) commenced the inning for the Pacers by leading off with a double to right centerfield.
A couple batters later with the bases loaded, Kyle Rice (Augusta, Ga./Cross Creek) singled in Leverett to give the Pacers an early 1-0 lead. With the bases still jammed, JJ Loker (Elkton, Va./Spotswood) brought home Josh Miller (Chapin, S.C./Chapin) next on a fielder's choice RBI to pull the Pacers on top 2-0.
The Pacers were not done in the inning with Tyler Bourdo (Evans, Ga./Truett-McConnell) tripling down the right field line to score two more runs and set the score at 4-0 in USC Aiken's favor.
In the top of fourth with two outs already on the board, Miller brought in two more runs for the Pacers when he doubled down the left field line to score Leverett and Stephen Bellantoni (Oviedo, Fla./Lake Sumter CC).
After two quick outs, Bellantoni got things going for the Pacers in the fourth originally when he singled to right centerfield. After a stolen base by Bellantoni and a Leverett walk, Miller brought home both on his double for the 6-0 Pacer lead.
After Georgia College was able to post a run on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth, Miller once again garnered USC Aiken a six-run lead in the top of the sixth inning when he singled through the right side to score Jowan Gray (Aiken, S.C/South Aiken). The RBI came with two outs once again.
The Pacers pushed their lead to 8-1 next when Georgia College reliever Walker McKinven's wild pitch allowed Leverett to score.
USC Aiken would also add a run each in the top of the eighth and ninth innings.
Zachary Kilday (Lilburn, Ga. /South Georgia College) singled up the middle to acquire an RBI in the top of the eighth for the Pacers, while Miller doubled down the left field line to score Bellantoni in the ninth to finish USC Aiken's scoring in its nine-run win.
Miller tied the school record for most single hits in a game with his 5-for-6 performance at the plate. He had four RBIs in total to go along with a run scored.
He was one of four Pacers in total to obtain multiple hits with Bellantoni going 3-for-5 with two runs scored. Leverett and Rice both had two hits in the contest.
Jim Moreland was the only Bobcat to record multiple hits. He was 2-for-3.
USC Aiken ended the game out-hitting Georgia College, 15-10.
Houston Taylor (Chesterfield, S.C./Cheraw) pitched all nine innings for USC Aiken. Taylor (3-0) struck out four in the first complete game of his career.
Eric Pettepher fell to 4-1 on the season in his loss on the mound to the Pacers. The Bobcat starter gave up six earned runs and seven hits in four innings of work.
