Pacers Survive Hurricanes

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

AIKEN, S.C. - Despite inclement weather moving through the area that pushed the start of game one up several hours and then delayed the beginning of the second game, the University of South Carolina Aiken softball team (21-11, 6-8 PBC) persevered to down the Hurricanes of Georgia Southwestern (20-24, 4-10 PBC) 2-0 and 3-2 in Peach Belt Conference action Saturday afternoon at J.H. Satcher Field.

In the first game, USC Aiken was able to capitalize on three critical errors by the Hurricanes to claim the contest 2-0. Brittney Williamson (Lexington, S.C./White Knoll) knocked in the game-winning run in the bottom of the third inning when she batted in Whitney Clary with a single down the right foul line to put the Pacers ahead 1-0.

Clary (Newberry, S.C./Newberry HS) would tack on an additional insurance run in the next inning as she batted Kylee Knop (Oxford, Ga./Kirkwood) in to give USCA the final 2-0 advantage. Clary led the way at the plate in game one with a perfect 3-for-3 performance at the plate to go along with her one RBI and one run scored.

Game two appeared to be headed for extra innings as neither team could pull ahead. USCA edged past the Hurricanes 1-0 in the fourth inning, but GSW was able to match the Pacers' efforts with a run of their own in the top of the sixth inning.

With the two tied at two-all heading into the bottom of the seventh inning, Lauren Locklear (Charleston, S.C./Wando) led off for the Pacers with a single to right field. She would advance all the way to third on a beautful bunt laid down by Kelley King (Chesterfield, S.C./Chesterfield) to give the Pacers the go-ahead run in scoring position.

Looking for a way to avoid the score, GSW intentionally walked Brittney Williamson to load the bases and open up an out at any base on the next play. However, USCA's designated player, Knop, foiled that scheme when she ripped a single up over the Hurricane pitcher's head to score Locklear and put the game away.

Lindsey Jones and Brandy Bossle led the Pacers' drive at the plate as both went 2-for-3 in the second game. Jones (North Augusta, S.C./North Augusta) scored two runs in the second contest while Bossle (North East, Md./Rising Sun) registered two RBIs.

India Kornegay (Eufaula, Ala./Eufaula) gutted out a two-game performance, striking out eight batters in the first game and five in the second to claim both wins in the circle for the Pacers. She improves to 10-4 for the season while former Eufaula High School teammate Christie Shankle suffered the loss in game one for Georgia Southwestern to fall to 4-10. Jessica Martin took the loss in game two to move to 6-7.

Winners of their last four overall, the Pacers will next travel Due West, S.C. for a non-conference doubleheader against Erskine on Tuesday, March 29. The first game is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. The second game will commence shortly after the conclusion of game one.
