Pacers Dispatch Knights in Non-Conference Action

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

AIKEN, S.C. – Spurred on by runs registered with two-outs on the board, the University of South Carolina Aiken softball team (19-11) defeated the Knights of Conference Carolinas foe St. Andrews Presbyterian College (4-23) 7-2 and 5-0 in non-conference action Wednesday afternoon at J.H. Satcher Field.

In total, nine of USC Aiken's 12 runs on the day came after the Knights had already registered two outs.

Five Pacers crossed the dish in the first game as USC Aiken steadily built up a 4-0 lead over the first four innings before St. Andrews was able to garner their first run of the day.

In the bottom of the sixth inning USCA tacked on three more runs when Whitney Clary (Newberry, S.C./Newberry HS) doubled down the right field foul line to score Brandy Bossle and Kayla Denham. Clary rounded the bases on the same play as the right fielder struggled to control the ball.

The Knights were able to claim one more run in the seventh inning, but would eventually fall 7-2.

Bossle (North East, Md./Rising Sun) led the way with three runs in the contest. She also led the Pacers at the plate with a perfect 2-for-2 performance.

Sophomore Lauren Rickabaugh (North Augusta, S.C./North Augusta) claimed the win in the first game for USCA to improve to 5-1 after striking out six batters and giving up just two hits.

Ashley Disque fell to 4-20 after the defeat.

The Pacers continued their recent trend of two-out rally scoring in the second game as all five runs scored in the contest came after the Knights were one out away from ending an inning.

Clary scored twice in the contest to lead the scoring drive with Brittney Williamson (Lexington, S.C./White Knoll), Kelley King (Chesterfield, S.C./Chesterfield) and Carly Hudson (Fountain Inn, S.C./St. Joseph's Catholic) all also scoring for the Pacers.

Lauren Locklear (Charleston, S.C./Wando) recorded three RBIs in the sixth inning.

India Kornegay (Eufaula, Ala./Eufaula) retired nine batters en route to registering the no-hitter and her fourth shutout of the season. With her first collegiate no-hitter, Kornegay improved to 8-4 for the 2011 season.

Natalie Whitman suffered the game-two loss for St. Andrews to fall to 0-3.

USCA will be back in action on Saturday, March 26 with a Peach Belt Conference doubleheader against the Hurricanes of Georgia Southwestern. The first game of the league twinbill is slated to start at 1 p.m. with the second game to follow shortly after the conclusion of the first game.
