Pacers See Home Winning-Streak End, Drop Conference Doubleheader to Nationally-Ranked Saints

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

AIKEN, S.C. – Entering their conference doubleheader with the No. 4 Saints of North Georgia, the University of South Carolina Aiken softball team was riding a 12-game winning-streak at home in the 2011 season. That streak came to an end Sunday afternoon as the Saints (28-8, 4-2 PBC) claimed both games in a Peach Belt Conference doubleheader over the Pacers (17-11, 4-8 PBC) 7-1 and 2-0 at J.H. Satcher Field.

The Saints raced out to an early 5-0 lead in the first inning of the first game and next looked back as they batted around the order right from the start. Kayla Denham (Palatka, Fla./Daytona State) acquired the Pacers' lone run of the game with an infield home run to the fence in left field to avoid the shutout, but USC Aiken struggled to gain any more momentum despite slowing North Georgia's progress.

Kylee Knop (Oxford, Ga./Kirkwood) suffered the loss in game one for USC Aiken to fall to 3-6 in 2011.

The second game saw the two teams more evenly matched as neither squad could gain any forward momentum until nationally-ranked North Georgia broke through by pushing two runs across in the sixth inning. The two runs would be all the Saints would need as they held off the Pacers' attempts en route to sweeping the doubleheader.

India Kornegay (Eufaula, Ala./Eufaula) moved to 7-4 for the season after striking out seven batters. When she retired her seventh batter in the game, the freshman right-handed hurler recorded her 125th strikeout of the season.

Jessica Coan pitched both games in the circle for the Saints to improve to 13-3 on the season striking out eight batters in the first game and fanning six more batters in the second game.

The Pacers remain at home for their next three doubleheaders before closing out he month of March on the road. USC Aiken's next contest against Conference Carolinas foe St. Andrews has been pushed back an hour to 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. on Wednesday, March 23 at J.H. Satcher Field.
