AIKEN, S.C. – The 16th-ranked University of South Carolina Aiken women's basketball team looked pretty in pink as they continued their winning ways during their annual Pink Zone game, downing the Saints of Flagler College 65-46 Monday evening at the Convocation Center in Peach Belt Conference action.
With their third league victory in a row, the second over the Saints this season, the Pacers are now 19-4 overall (11-2 PBC) while Flagler falls to 5-15 (2-10 PBC) for the 2010-11 campaign.
The USC Aiken women's basketball team, sporting pink shoelaces, pink hair ties and even several pairs of pink shoes, held their annual Pink Zone celebration at halftime of the contest to honor survivors and those who have died from breast cancer. The survivors were each presented with a pink carnation in honor of their victory over breast cancer and gathered at half court to be recognized during the event.
Daniela Tarailo opened the game for USC Aiken by sinking three three-pointers in the first two minutes of the game to give the Pacers an early 9-0 lead. 14 of her career-high 24 points came in the first 10 minutes of the game.
USC Aiken entered intermission with a 31-22 lead despite being held to shooting just 30.8 percent (12-39) from the floor. The Saints were not able to do much better as they were only 37.5 percent (9-24) from the floor.
The Pacers never trailed in the second half, having their lead cut to no less than six before going up by 19 before the final buzzer.
Tarailo's (Crown Point, Ind./Crown Point) game-high 24 points eclipsed her previous high of 17 she accrued during a contest against Montevallo as a freshman last season. The sophomore guard also recorded a career-high in steals as she swiped six away from the Saints.
Hannah DeGraffinreed (Raleigh, N.C./Merrimack) was the only other Pacer able to garner double-digit points as she recorded 14 points with Brittany Bowen (Ellicott City, Md./Mt. Hebron) knocking down nine of her own. Deandra Schirmer (Holton, Kan./Cloud County) controlled the glass in the contest as she brought down a game-high 10 rebounds, six off the defensive glass.
For Flagler, Tierra Ford led the charge with 17 points and six rebounds while Rachel Brown accrued 11 points of her own.
The Pacers will next take a trek to Alabama for a PBC road tilt against the Falcons of the University of Montevallo in Montevallo, Ala. on Thursday, Feb. 10. The women will get things started at 5:30 p.m. with the men's game to follow shortly after the conclusion of that game at approximately 7:30 p.m.
