14th-Ranked Pacer Women Make “Senior Night” a Night to Remember with Upset Over No. 2 Lander

Box Score

AIKEN, S.C. – "Senior Night" was certainly a night to remember for the trio of seniors celebrating their final regular-season home game within the friendly confines of the Convocation Center Wednesday night as the 14th-ranked University of South Carolina Aiken women's basketball team (24-4, 16-2 PBC) registered a monumental 66-59 Peach Belt Conference upset victory over the second-ranked Lander Bearcats (25-2, 15-2 PBC).

The win was not only USC Aiken's second victory over a top-five team this season, but it also allows the Pacer women to clinch a share of the PBC East Division title and gives the Pacers the opportunity to capture the top seed in the division heading into the 2011 PBC Basketball Tournament.

The 2010-11 season has certainly been one to remember for the Pacer women as the team and head coach Mike Brandt have reached several lofty achievements already this season and can now add tying the most wins in a single season during USC Aiken's NCAA Division II era to that list. The Pacers' 24th win of the season was the most by any of Brandt's squads and ties the 1990-91 Pacer women for second-most victories in a single season all-time. The 1977-78 team holds the overall school record as they went 25-5 in NAIA action.

After the victory, the Pacers honored their three seniors for their contributions to the women's basketball program just moments prior to the start of the men's game. Nakia Pinkney (Orangeburg, S.C./Orangeburg-Wilkinson) and Triahna Harris (Springfield, Va./Springfield) have been a part of the team for the last four years while Deandra Schirmer (Holton, Kan./Cloud County) is a two-year starter after transferring into the program prior to last season.

The lead changed hands nine times in the first half of the contest with the Pacers edging out a 35-27 lead heading into intermission as every Pacer who saw action on the court scored in the opening half.

USC Aiken turned out a strong shooting performance as they hit on 44.4 percent (16-36) of their shots in the first stanza, including hitting 75 percent (3-4) from beyond the three-point arc while the Bearcats were just 33.3 percent (3-9) from three-point range.

Lander pulled within two points (53-51) with just under five minutes left in regulation off a pair of three-pointers by Brittni Johnson, but that would be as close as the Bearcats would be able to get as the Pacers never trailed in the second half and stretched their lead back out to the final seven points by the final buzzer.

Three Pacers recorded double-digit points in the upset victory as junior Hannah DeGraffinreed (Raleigh, N.C./Merrimack) secured a double-double with 17 points and 14 rebounds to lead USC Aiken. Daniela Tarailo (Crown Point, Ind./Crown Point) chipped in 14 points of her own while Schirmer ended her night with 11 points and was just one rebound shy of her own double-double with nine boards.

Already second all-time in Pacer history for most assists in a career, Harris added seven assists to her career total.

Three Bearcats had double-figure performances with Johnson leading all players with 20 points. Shannon McKever was close behind Johnson with 17 points to register a double-double to go along with her 12 rebounds and Ciara Lyons added 13 points in her effort.

After concluding their regular season, the Pacers will now look ahead to the 2011 Peach Belt Conference Basketball Tournament to be contested next week.
