Denham and Fellow Newcomers Keep Pacers Perfect

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

AIKEN, S.C. – Newcomers continue to lift the University of South Carolina Aiken softball team to victory, as a freshman and a pair of transfers secured two wins, 1-0 and 2-1 in 10 innings, for the Pacers over the Indians of South Atlantic Conference foe Catawba Saturday afternoon at J.H Satcher Field.

With the pair of victories, USC Aiken remains perfect at 6-0 on the young season while Catawba moves to 5-3.

In the first game, USC Aiken's game-winning run came in the second inning when Lindsey Jones (North Augusta, S.C./North Augusta) scored off a single by catcher Nicole Borden (Jacksonville, Fla./Bolles School).

Behind stellar lights-out pitching by freshman hurler India Kornegay, the Pacers held the Indians at bay over the final five innings, not relinquishing a hit until the fifth inning.

The Peach Belt Conference Pitcher of the Week, Kornegay (Eufaula, Ala./Eufaula) recorded another stellar game in the circle for the Pacers as she struck out 13 batters and recorded the shutout to improve to 3-0 for the season. She was just two off of the most strikeouts in a game, the second time this season she came close to breaking the single game record for most strikeouts.

Brittany Murray suffered the loss for Catawba to fall to 3-1 on the season after striking out just three batters.

In the second game, Catawba eased out to an early 1-0 lead off a home run in the top of the third inning by Khourtni Hester, but the Pacers would respond in the bottom of the inning.

USC Aiken knotted the score at one-all when Brandy Bossle (North East, Md./Rising Sun) scored after Kayla Denham (Palatka, Fla./Daytona State) sent the ball hard to the second baseman who then threw to first base where nobody was manning the bag. Denham continued to second and Bossle rounded third and made her way home to tie things up.

Neither team could find the go-ahead run over the next four innings, sending the game into overtime to settle the game.

In the top of the eighth inning, the Indians gave the Pacers a scare as they slowly loaded the bases, but USC Aiken battled hard, not allowing Catawba to pull away.

In the bottom of the 10th inning, USC Aiken similarly loaded the bases with only one out on the board. Denham took advantage of the situation by hitting an infield single that was enough to plate a run and earn the Pacers a thrilling victory.

Knop (Oxford, Ga/Kirkwood) struck out eight batters en route to recording her second win of the season in the circle to move to 2-0 for 2011.

Emily Huneycutt suffered her second loss of the season, striking out just two batters, to fall to an even 2-2 on the season.

Denham was USC Aiken's leading producer at the plate as she went 4-for-8 on the day with one RBI.

The Pacers will now hit the road for the first time this season as they travel to Hickory, N.C. tomorrow, Sunday, Feb. 20, to take on the 13th-ranked Bears of Lenoir-Rhyne. The first pitch of the first game is scheduled for 1 p.m. with the second game to follow shortly after the conclusion of the first contest.
