Pacers Maul Bears in Doubleheader to Remain Perfect

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

AIKEN, S.C. – A no-hitter and shutout victory capped the University of South Carolina Aiken softball team's opening weekend as the Pacers mauled the Shaw University Bears 10-2 and 8-0 in a pair of five-inning games Sunday afternoon at J.H Satcher Field.

USC Aiken remains a perfect 4-0 on the young season while Shaw falls to a disappointing 1-9.

In the first game, India Kornegay picked up right where she left off in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader, striking out two of her first three batters.

The Pacers would go on a tear over the first three innings putting up nine runs before Shaw was able to record their first hit of the contest.

Eight different Pacers crossed the dish to score in the game with Kelley King (Chesterfield, S.C./Chesterfield) and Blair Warren (Darlington, S.C./Florence-Darlington Tech) each scoring two runs each.

Lauren Locklear (Charleston, S.C./Wando), Hillary Stewart (Blythewood, S.C./Blythewood) and Lindsey Jones (North Augusta, S.C./North Augusta) each recorded two RBIs in the first game of the doubleheader.

Kornegay (Eufaula, Ala./Eufaula) continued to impress with her performance in the circle, recording her second win of the season. In her four innings of work, Kornegay struck out six batters and did not relinquish a hit or run until the fourth inning.

The Pacers once again shut the Bears down in the second game with the game ending in just five innings. USC Aiken scored three runs in the first and second innings before capping things off for their weekend with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth inning.

Six Pacers crossed the dish in the second contest to score with Whitney Clary (Newberry, S.C./Newberry) recording three runs and an RBI in the contest to give her four runs on the day.

The second game was just what the doctor ordered for sophomore hurler Lauren Rickabaugh who made her return to the circle for the first time since having to sit out most of the 2010 season with an injury. Rickabaugh (North Augusta, S.C./North Augusta) pitched lights out in four innings striking out seven batters and walking just one en route to recording her first shutout of the season and USC Aiken's first no-hitter since the 2009 season.

Relief pitcher Samantha Lemm (Berlin, N.J./Eastern) closed out both games for the Pacers, retiring all three batters she faced in the second game to seal the win.

Daniela Archibold suffered the loss in both games for Shaw to fall to 0-4 for the season as she failed to record a single strikeout in either game.

Jones was 4-for-4 on the day with a pair of RBIs while Locklear went a combined 3-for-4 on the day with three RBIs and a pair of runs scored.

USC Aiken will remain at home for another doubleheader on Saturday, Feb. 19 when the Indians of Catawba will come calling. The first game at J.H. Satcher Field will begin at 1 p.m. with the second game to follow shortly after the conclusion of the first.
