Box Score MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The 15th-ranked University of South Carolina Aiken women's basketball team collected win number 20 on the 2010-11 season in a 69-59 Peach Belt Conference Women's Basketball road victory over Montevallo on Thursday evening at BankTrust Arena.
The Pacers (20-4, 12-2 PBC) have now captured 20 or more wins in a season in four of the last five years. USC Aiken won 20 games each in 2006-07 and 2007-08, while the 2008-09 Pacers picked up 22 victories.
USC Aiken's Deandra Schirmer (Holton, Kan./Cloud County) placed the Pacers on the scoreboard first with 19:33 left in the first half. Seconds later, Montevallo (8-13, 4-8 PBC) evened the game at 2-2 after a Shavonne Seymore lay-up with 18:55 to play in the first stanza.
Montevallo's lay-up would prove to be all that they would be able to muster for over 10 minutes as USC Aiken would pull ahead by 14 at 16-2 by the 8:57 mark of the first half. The Falcons were finally able to hit a three-pointer to snap their scoreless drought with 8:37 remaining in the first half of play.
From there, Montevallo would narrowly outscore the Pacers 21-19 the rest of the first half to leave the Pacers clinging to a 35-26 lead at the halftime break.
After keeping the lead around or above double digits for most of the early part of the second half, the Pacer advantage was 12 points at 52-40 after a Schirmer three-point play with 9:47 left in the contest.
Montevallo proceeded to go on an 11-4 run over the next four minutes to pull within five at 56-51 with 5:24 left in the second half of action.
That would be as close as the Falcons would be able to get in the final minutes with the Pacers emerging with the 10-point win.
The Pacers concluded the win over Montevallo shooting 42 percent (20 of 48) as a team. Montevallo shot just a bit better in the loss at 44 percent (23 for 52).
Kayla Harris (Raleigh, N.C./Wakefield) was the top scorer for the Pacers, finishing with 18 points and five rebounds.
Hannah DeGraffinreed (Raleigh, N.C./Merrimack) was just behind with 15 points and six rebounds.
Pacer guard Nakia Pinkney (Orangeburg, S.C./Orangeburg-Wilkinson) just missed on a double-double in the game with eight points and eight rebounds.
Montevallo only had one player finish Thursday's Pacer win in double figures with Tiffany McClure acquiring 13 for the Falcons in their loss.
