Box Score RICHMOND, Va. – The University of South Carolina Aiken
men's basketball team saw its winning streak come to an end in a
75-69 loss to Virginia Union in non-conference men's basketball
action at Barco-Stevens Hall.
USC Aiken (8-2) entered the road game against Virginia Union
(6-7) on Friday riding a seven-game winning streak. The Pacers
commenced the game having not lost since falling 70-66 to Elizabeth
City State in Elizabeth City, N.C. on Nov. 19.
Virginia Union's six-point win Friday avenged an 81-62 loss to
the Pacers in the final game of the 2011 Southeastern Tool-Don
Cheeks-Dr. John Riley USC Aiken Pre-Holiday Classic at the
Convocation Center on Saturday, Dec. 17.
The Pacers led by as many as eight points in the first half,
clinging to a 26-18 lead with 6:14 remaining in the first
stanza.
USC Aiken would eventually enter the halftime break with a
two-point 36-34 advantage.
The Pacers would hold the lead for the first almost six minutes
of the second half before Virginia Union garnered its first lead of
the half at 46-45 with 14:05 left in the game.
Virginia Union would never trail in the contest again despite
the Pacers battling to within four in the final seconds of the
game.
USC Aiken finished its loss to Virginia Union shooting 38.8
percent (26-for-67) as a team. Virginia Union connected upon 51.8
percent (29-for-56) of its shots as a team in the game.
Three Pacers finished in double figures in the game with Re'mon Nelson
(Columbus, Ohio/Canal Winchester) leading the way with a team-high
15 points. Nelson also had four assists and two steals.
Sterling
Council (Camden, S.C./Camden) was right behind Nelson with 14
points, while Jeremiah Pojah
(Houston, Texas/East Texas Baptist) just missed on collecting
another double-double with 12 points and nine rebounds. Pojah
obtained four of his nine boards on the offensive glass.
Virginia Union's Wesley Simmons led all players in the game with
19 points. Cordero Holt was the only other Virginia Union player in
double figures with 10 points.
The game against Virginia Union on Friday marked USC Aiken's
final non-conference game of the year.
USC Aiken will next commence the 2012 portion of its schedule on
Jan. 4 against league foe Francis Marion in Florence, S.C. Tip-off
between the two league and state rivals is slated for 7:30 p.m.
