Box Score AIKEN, S.C. – Re'mon Nelson
scored 19 points and the University of South Carolina Aiken men's
basketball team acquired its fifth straight win in a 103-81 Peach
Belt Conference victory over Armstrong Atlantic State on Wednesday
evening at the Convocation Center.
The 103 points scored by the Pacers in the game marked the first
time since USC Aiken downed Mars Hill, 101-86, on Dec. 30, 2010
that USC Aiken (6-1, 2-0 PBC) had passed the century mark in a
game.
Five different Pacers finished in double figures in the contest
including Nelson.
Nelson (Columbus, Ohio/Canal Winchester) took things over in the
second half in the game, scoring 15 of his 19 points in the second
stanza. Nelson was 8-for-10 from the field off the bench in the
game. He also had two assists.
Ronald
Zimmerman (Columbia, S.C./Spring Valley) was just behind Nelson
with 15 points. He claimed 12 of his 15 points from beyond the arc
where he was 4-for-6.
Both
Jeremiah Pojah
(Houston, Texas/East Texas Baptist) and
Sterling Council
(Camden, S.C./Camden) concluded the Pacer win with 13 points each.
Pojah just missed on another double-double in the game as he also
had nine rebounds to go along with three assists and a steal.
Council was a perfect 6-for-6 from the free throw line en route
to his 13 points. He also had three assists and a career-high two
blocks.
Rick
Alderman (Roanoke, Va./Concord) was the final Pacer in double
figures with 10 points.
Joel
Gierbolini (Carolina, Puerto Rico/Long Island) claimed his
third double figure rebounding effort as a Pacer with a game-high
12 caroms. He also had a career-high six blocks.
Gierbolini was part of a Pacer block party in the game that saw
USC Aiken finish with 10 blocks.
Aric Miller was the only Pirate to capture a double figure
scoring output with a game-high 25 points.
USC Aiken as a team finished the win over Armstrong (4-4, 1-1
PBC) shooting 47.8 percent (32-for-67) as a team. Armstrong ended
its loss to USC Aiken shooting 43.3 percent (29-for-67) as a
team.
USC Aiken connected upon 50 percent (9-for-18) of its attempts
from beyond the arc. The Pacers hit 71.4 percent (30-for-42) of
their free throw attempts.
USC Aiken will next play host to the 2011 Southeastern Tool-Don
Cheeks-Dr. John Riley USC Aiken Pre-Holiday Classic. The 2011
Southeastern Tool-Don Cheeks-Dr. John Riley USC Aiken Pre-Holiday
Classic will be contested at the USC Aiken Convocation Center on
Friday, Dec. 16 and Saturday, Dec. 17.
The extremely competitive field will feature Elizabeth City
State, Lenoir-Rhyne and Virginia Union along with the host
Pacers.
The 2011 Southeastern Tool-Don Cheeks-Dr. John Riley USC Aiken
Pre-Holiday Classic will get underway on the
16th at 5:30 p.m. with Lenoir-Rhyne and Virginia
Union taking the floor against one another at the Convocation
Center. USC Aiken will take on Elizabeth City State in the final
game of the day at approximately 7:30 p.m.
The second day of the 2011 Southeastern Tool-Don Cheeks-Dr. John
Riley USC Aiken Pre-Holiday Classic will begin at 1 p.m. with
Elizabeth City State and Lenoir-Rhyne playing against one another.
USC Aiken will close the event for the second straight year with a
game against Virginia Union at approximately 3 p.m.
