Box Score PEMBROKE, N.C. – The University of South Carolina Aiken
men's soccer team earned the first positive result of its 2011
Peach Belt Conference campaign with a 1-1 tie with UNC Pembroke on
Wednesday evening at the Varsity Grounds.
The tie between the two teams comes almost exactly one year
after the two teams battled to a 1-1 tie in their last meeting at
the "Pacer Pit" on Oct. 6, 2010.
USC Aiken (2-6-2, 0-2-1) netted the first goal of the match in
the 20th-minute when Steven Campbell
(Augusta, Ga./Reinhardt) scored his first goal of the season off an
assist from Chinedu Arinze
(Stone Mountain, Ga./Georgia State). Campbell's blast into the
upper left corner garnered the Pacers a 1-0 lead.
The Pacer lead would last just 10 minutes as UNC Pembroke evened
the game at 1-1 in the 30th-minute when Sam Miles scored
his eighth goal of the season off an Adam Smith assist.
Both teams would have their chances in the second half and in
the two overtime periods, but neither would be able to find the
back of the net the rest of the way in the 1-1 double overtime
tie.
UNC Pembroke (7-2-1, 1-2-1 PBC) owned a 31-17 shot advantage in
the match. The Braves took seven more corner kicks (8-1) than the
Pacers.
Robert
Bolender (Kennesaw, Ga./Reinhardt) was strong between the pipes
for the Pacers in the 1-1 tie, making 13 saves in 110 minutes of
action.
UNC Pembroke goalkeeper Ryan Hanson logged all 110 minutes,
saving four Pacer shots.
USC Aiken will next close the week at home with a 5 p.m. match
against Georgia Southwestern on Saturday, Oct. 8.
The match will be part of City Soccer Night at USC Aiken as all
of the city of Aiken soccer teams are invited to attend the
match.
