Box Score AIKEN, S.C. – The University of South Carolina Aiken men's
soccer team acquired its fourth tie of the 2011 season in a 2-2 tie
with St. Andrews at the "Pacer Pit" on Wednesday, Oct. 26.
The match was USC Aiken's final non-conference match of the 2011
regular season.
USC Aiken (3-8-4) controlled things statistically in the match,
ending the match with a 23-13 shot advantage.
The match featured 26 corner kicks between the two teams with
USC Aiken taking 15 of the 26 corner kicks.
St. Andrews (3-12-1) scored the first goal of the game in the
third-minute when Nowell Worley headed in a Patrick Stewart corner
kick for a very early 1-0 advantage.
The Pacers would even things just before intermission. Chinedu Arinze
(Stone Mountain, Ga./Georgia State) scored the tying goal for the
Pacers.
Arinze placed himself in position for the goal when he blasted
the ball just outside the 18-yard box off a St. Andrews defender.
The ball landed just inside the box and opportunistically Arinze
was able to claim the ball with nobody in front of him but St.
Andrews goalkeeper Corey Francis. Arinze took his opportunity,
blasting the ball into the back of the net at the 41:46 mark.
USC Aiken would take a 2-1 lead in the match just over 11
minutes into the second half when Carson Villa
(Savannah, Ga./Benedictine) kicked in a loose ball off a Troy Watson
(Kingston, Jamaica/Montreat) shot.
The Pacers looked to be heading towards the win in regulation,
but St. Andrews' Michael Mutebi hit in a loose ball in the Pacer
six-yard box to tie the game at 2-2 in the
80th-minute.
USC Aiken had the best opportunity in the two 10-minute overtime
periods on a Scott Newby
(Leicestershire, United Kingdom/Wreake Valley) breakaway, but
Francis was in the right position to save the shot to preserve the
tie.
Francis saved 10 Pacer shots overall in the match.
The Pacers utilized the services of two netminders in the
contest with Robert Bolender
(Kennesaw, Ga./Reinhardt) playing the first half. Joshua Poissant
(Windsor Locks, Conn./Windsor Locks) played the final 65 minutes of
the match. The two combined to make three saves.
The Pacers will next close their regular season at home against
Clayton State at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 29. The match will
serve as Senior Day for the Pacers.
