Box Score 2 GREENWOOD, S.C. – The University of South Carolina Aiken
volleyball team garnered a victory in both of its matches on
Saturday at the Lander Crossover Volleyball Tournament.
USC Aiken acquired a 3-1 (25-23, 25-17, 23-25, 25-22) win over
Erskine in its first match of the day. The Pacers then battled to a
3-2 (21-25, 31-29, 24-26, 25-16, 15-11) victory over region power
Lees-McRae (20-8) in its second match of the day.
The victories on Saturday moved the Pacers back to .500 on the
year at 12-12. The Pacers are currently in the midst of a
four-match winning streak.
In the second match win over Lees-McRae, USC Aiken's Samantha
Lukralle passed Veronica Seidle (2004-07) to become third
all-time in school history in digs. Lukralle, who has a
team-leading 351 digs in 2011, now has 1,508 in her three-year
career. She is only 44 digs away from passing Stefanie Durham
(2005-08) for second all-time in school history.
The two victories on Saturday also put USC Aiken head volleyball
coach Glenn Cox just one match away from his 200th
career victory. Cox is presently 199-143 in his career.
USC Aiken next returns home for a 7 p.m. match against rival
Augusta State on Tuesday, Oct. 25 at the Convocation Center.
Match One (USC Aiken 3, Erskine 1)
USC Aiken raced out to a 2-0 advantage in its first match of the
day on Saturday. The Pacers picked up a hard-fought 25-23 win in
the first set before garnering a relatively easy 25-17 win in the
second set.
Erskine (15-10) placed themselves back in the match in the third
set with a 25-23 win. The Pacers would not let the Flying Fleet
force a fifth set though with the Pacers earning a 25-22 win in the
fourth game to take a 3-1 match victory.
Shannon
Byers (Morristown, Minn./Faribault) was the only Pacer to claim
double-digit kills in the win over the Flying Fleet. Byers acquired
a double-double in the match with 12 kills and 16 digs.
In total, four Pacers secured double-digit digs in the match with
Lukralle (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst) leading the way with a
match-high 24 digs.
The Pacer setting tandem of Alex Petock
(Woodbridge, Va./Woodbridge) and Sheila Walsh (Fort
Mill, S.C./Nation Ford) both owned double-doubles in the match.
Petock claimed 24 assists and 14 digs in the match, while Walsh
ended the match with 13 assists and 12 digs.
Jamie Murray led the Flying Fleet in their loss with 11 kills.
Brooke Dodge finished with 16 digs for Erskine.
Match Two (USC Aiken 3, Lees-McRae 2)
The Pacer win over Lees-McRae on Saturday began with the Bobcats
picking up a 25-21 win in the first set.
In the second set, the two teams battled back and forth the
entire set, but USC Aiken was finally able to hold off the Bobcats
for a crucial 31-29 victory. Extra points would be needed once
again in the third set, but this time Lees-McRae would nudge ahead
in a 26-24 win.
USC Aiken would take things over from there as the Pacers rolled
in the next two sets to earn a 3-2 match victory. The Pacers
acquired a 25-16 win in the fourth game before pulling away for a
15-11 win in the decisive fifth set.
The Pacers finished the win over Lees-McRae hitting .124 as a
team. Lees-McRae hit just .093 in the match. The Pacers held a
slight 12-11 total team block advantage.
Byers and Hannah Tierney
(Winchester, Va./James Wood) were the only Pacers to secure
double-digit kills in the win over the Bobcats. Both had 10 in the
match.
Byers also claimed 17 digs to commandeer her second
double-double of the day.
Petock and Walsh also obtained their second double-doubles of
the day in the win over Lees-McRae. Walsh led the Pacers with 22
assists and 10 digs, while Petock finished the Pacer win with 20
assists and 14 digs.
Lukralle tied Lees-McRae libero Sariah Suryadevara for the
match-high in digs with 28. Lees-McRae's Taylor Clendenin led all
in the match with 21 kills.
