Goal in Final Seconds Leads Flagler Past Pacers

Box Score

AIKEN, S.C. – Jenny Pineiro scored two goals, but the University of South Carolina Aiken women's soccer team was unable to withstand a goal by Flagler in the final seconds of the match in a 3-2 loss to the Saints on Saturday at the "Pacer Pit."

All five goals in the match came in the second half as Flagler (7-7, 3-4 PBC) and USC Aiken (4-8, 1-5 PBC) entered intermission with the score knotted at 0-0.

The first three goals in the match came furiously over a three-minute stretch early in the second stanza.

Rafaela Faria scored the first goal of the match for Flagler in the 53rd-minute when she was able to opportunistically kick a loose ball into the Pacer goal.

The 1-0 lead for Flagler would not even last a minute as the Pacers scored at the 55:03 mark on a Pineiro penalty kick that was blasted into the right corner of the Flagler net.

Faria was also involved in Flagler's next goal when she assisted Loren Cate to give the Saints a 2-1 lead in the 56th-minute.

The Pacers would even the match at 2-2 in the 75th-minute when Pineiro (Charleston, S.C./Fort Dorchester) was able to take advantage of a breakaway by chipping the ball over Flagler netminder Cristina Coca.

The two teams looked to be headed to overtime, but with just five seconds remaining Flagler's Katie Kaufmann was able to score off a Taylor Adkins cross.

Flagler owned a 22-9 shot advantage in the match. The Saints took four more corner kicks (6-2) than the Pacers in the match.

USC Aiken will next travel to Greenwood, S.C. for a Peach Belt Conference match against Lander on Wednesday, Oct. 19. Kickoff is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
