Box Score AIKEN, S.C. – Not much did not go in favor of the 22nd-ranked University of South Carolina Aiken women's basketball team as they recorded their ninth-straight victory in a 91-61 rout over the Pirates of Armstrong Atlantic State in Peach Belt Conference action Saturday evening at the Convocation Center.
The win over the Pirates lifts the nationally-ranked Pacer women to 14-2 overall in the 2010-11 campaign, and improve them to a perfect 6-0 in league action.
The Pirates fall to one over .500 on the season at 6-5 as they suffered their first league loss of the season to move to 2-1 in the PBC.
The Pacers dominated almost every aspect of their ninth-straight victory as they led from opening tip-off when Tiffany Moody (Raleigh, N.C./Ohio Valley) laid up an easy two-pointer off an assist from Deandra Schirmer (Holton, Kan./Cloud County), all the way to the final buzzer.
By intermission, USC Aiken was up 49-29 with all but two Pacers having scored. The Pacers shot an even 50 percent (16-32) in the opening stanza and were lethal from the charity stripe (a perfect 11-11) and from behind the three-point arc (6-9).
In the first half alone, the Pirates committed 19 turnovers.
USC Aiken continued their dominance into the second half as they went up by as many as 35 points with12:07 left in the contest. They never led by fewer than the stanza-opening 18-point lead including a stretch of over seven minutes where they continued to hold at least a 30-point lead.
Every player scored by the final buzzer, including three Pacers who scored in double-digits with Kayla Harris (Raleigh, N.C./Wakefield) leading USC Aiken's drive with 16 points. She also tallied a team-high five assists on the evening and scooped up a team-high-tying three steals.
Daniela Tarailo (Crown Point, Ind./Crown Point) was just behind Harris with 15 points of her own while Hannah DeGraffinreed (Raleigh, N.C./Merrimack) recorded 11 points and was a perfect 5-for-5 from the free throw line.
As a team, the Pacers were able to end the game shooting 52.5 percent (32-61) from the field and were an impressive 94.1 percent from the charity stripe as they missed just one of their 17 attempts. USC Aiken corralled in 17 steals as the Pirates committed a dismal 31 turnovers over the two halves of play.
Arpine Amirkhanyan led all scorers as she recorded a double-double with 20 points and 11 rebounds. Mauri Wells chipped in 13 points of her own for the Pirates' effort.
The Pirates as a team were able to out-rebound the Pacers 34-23 but their turnovers and 48.9 percent (23-47) shooting from the field, including a disappointing 25 percent (3-12) from behind the three-point arc, doomed the Pirates' attack from the outset of the contest.
USC Aiken will now look to take their current nine-win streak onto the road when they travel down Interstate 20 to Florence, S.C. on Jan. 12 to challenge the Patriots of Francis Marion in a PBC doubleheader. The women are scheduled to tip off at 5:30 p.m. before the men take to the hardwood at approximately 7:30 p.m.
