Box Score AMERICUS, Ga. – Kayla Harris scored a career-high 23 points and the 25th-ranked University of South Carolina Aiken women's basketball team captured its seventh straight victory in a 70-61 win over Georgia Southwestern on Monday evening at the Storm Dome.
USC Aiken's seventh straight win improves the Pacers to 12-2 (4-0 PBC) on the 2010-11 season. Georgia Southwestern with the loss dropped to 6-4 (0-1 PBC) on the 2010-11 season.
The seven straight wins ties for the most consecutive wins in a single season under ninth-year head coach Mike Brandt. The Pacers also won seven straight games during the 2004-05 season (Nov. 19-Dec. 3).
The story of the game would be in the opening minutes of the second half. The score 39-36 in USC Aiken's favor, the Pacers would go on a 10-1 run to own a 12-point 49-37 lead with just under 15 minutes left to play.
The Pacers would continue looking as if they would pull away from there, extending that advantage to 18 points at 58-40.
Georgia Southwestern would not roll over though as the Hurricanes went on a 18-5 run to pull within five at 63-58 with under five minutes to play.
The Hurricanes would not be able to get any closer as Harris (Raleigh, N.C./Wakefield) would score USC Aiken's final seven points to garner the Pacers the nine-point win.
Harris was 9-for-13 from the field en route to the career-best 23 points. She also had a career-high tying six rebounds in the game.
Hannah DeGraffinreed (Raleigh, N.C./Merrimack) was the only other Pacer in double figures in the contest, scoring 13 points.
USC Aiken as a team shot 48 percent from the field in the win over Georgia Southwestern, while holding the Hurricanes to 40 percent from the field.
Kanita Holloway led four Hurricanes in double figures with 15 points.
Nationally-ranked USC Aiken will next welcome league foe UNC Pembroke to the Convocation Center at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 5. The night will be Security Federal Bank and Veracity Payment Solutions Night at the Convocation Center.
