Box Score AIKEN, S.C. – It took
all 90 minutes of regulation and three minutes of the first
overtime, but USC Aiken's men's soccer team was able to
garner their first win of the 2010 season 2-1 over the visiting
Wolves of Newberry College Saturday night fittingly at home at the
"Pacer Pit."
With the win, USC Aiken is now
1-5-1 on the season while Newberry falls to a similar 1-5-2 for the
year.
The first half passed by
scoreless as neither team was able to find the back of the net with
USC Aiken owning a slight 7-6 advantage in shots over the
Wolves.
Nathan Arroyo found pay dirt
first in the 61st minute giving Newberry their first lead of the
contest but USC Aiken would not allow the lead to stand for
long.
Justin Barlotta (Summerville,
S.C./Summerville) tied it back up just seconds later at 1-1 after
Carson Villa (Savannah, Ga./Benedictine Military) sent a ball
through to him that Barlotta then blasted into the lower left
corner of the net.
90 minutes proved to not be
enough for either team to claim the victory sending the match into
a 10-minute overtime. The Pacers only needed three minutes as a
shot by Chinedu Arinze (Stone Mountain, Ga./Georgia State)
ricocheted off a Newberry player and just past the Wolves'
netminder to score an own goal on Newberry giving the golden goal
to USC Aiken for the Pacers' first win of the 2010
campaign.
USC Aiken ended the match with
the 14-13 advantage in shots over Newberry and a 12-3 advantage in
corner kicks.
USC Aiken now gets a break to
prepare before they open the month of October with a PBC road game
on Saturday, Oct. 2. The Pacers will travel to St. Augustine, Fla.
to challenge the Saints of Flagler College for a 7 p.m. conference
match.
