Box Score AIKEN, S.C. – Three
Pacers recorded double-digit kills to lead the University of South
Carolina Aiken volleyball team as they picked up their first Peach
Belt Conference victory of the season over the visiting Lander
Bearcats 3-0 within the friendly confines of the Convocation Center
Wednesday night.
With the win, the Pacers
improve to 4-5 overall and 1-1 in Peach Belt action while the
Bearcats fall to 5-3 overall and start their 2010 PBC campaign at
0-1.
USC Aiken and Lander battled
back and forth hard over the three-set match with the Pacers taking
the first two sets 25-23 and 25-20 before just squeaking out an
exciting 28-26 victory to claim the match in the third
set.
Freshman Leah Rodgers
(Longwood, Fla./Lake Mary) led all players with 12 kills in the
match while the hard-hitting duo of Megan Disney (Knoxville,
Tenn./Karns) and Shannon Byers (Morristown, Minn./Faribault) added
11 kills each. Disney hit an astounding .733 over the three-set
match while Byers recorded another double-double on the season
adding in 10 digs in her effort.
Sophomore outside hitter
Chelsey Kight (Charleston, S.C./West Ashley) led the Pacer front
row with three total blocks while setter Ashley Farwell (Wake
Forest, N.C./Wake Forest Rolesville) recorded a double-double of
her own recording 23 assists and 11 digs.
Melissa McCracken led the
Bearcat offensive with 10 kills while Magi Nottingham chipped in
nine kills of her own.
The two teams were fairly
evenly matched in kills with USC Aiken just beating out Lander
48-40 while the Pacer defense combined for 11 blocks to
Lander's four to keep the Bearcats at a hitting percentage of
.155.
USC Aiken will now load up the
bus to head south for a pair of tough road Peach Belt Conference
matches. The Pacers will first head to the Sunshine State to
challenge the PBC preseason favorite Saints of Flagler College in
St. Augustine, Fla. on Friday, Sept. 17 for a 7 p.m. match before
heading back up the road a little bit to Savannah, Ga. to tangle
with the Pirates of Armstrong Atlantic State on Saturday, Sept. 18
at 2 p.m.
