MORROW, Ga. – USC Aiken's Gregory Andrade and Juan
Xavier Ponce were chosen to the 2010 Peach Belt Conference
Men's Tennis All-Conference team on Saturday morning during a
banquet at the site of the Peach Belt Conference Men's Tennis
Championship.
Ranked seventh nationally, Andrade (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Sergio
D'Amorim) and Ponce (Miami, Fla. /Drury University) were chosen to
the first team as a doubles tandem. Ponce was also selected to the
singles second team.
As a duo, Andrade and Ponce are currently 17-5 on the 2010
season. They were 7-2 in Peach Belt Conference action. The tandem
has won 13 of their last 15 matches overall, which included an
11-match winning streak. Andrade and Ponce have played all of their
matches at No. 1 doubles.
In singles, Ponce was a team-best 14-6 in singles in the 2010
campaign. He was 5-4 in PBC action. Ranked 16th
regionally, Ponce played mainly at No. 2 singles over the course of
the season. He was 13-4 at No. 2 singles and a perfect 1-2 at No. 1
singles.
The 26th-ranked and eighth-seeded USC Aiken
men's tennis team saw its three-match winning streak snapped
yesterday in a 5-0 Peach Belt Conference Men's Championship
quarterfinal loss to top-seeded and national No. 1 Armstrong
Atlantic State at the Laker Courts on the campus of Clayton State
University.
The loss drops the Pacers to 11-1 1 on the year. USC Aiken will
now have to wait and see if they will receive an at-large bid to
the 2010 NCAA Division II Men's Tennis Championship. The
First and Second rounds will be contested on May 6-8 at sites yet
to be determined.
The 2010 all-conference team is listed below as selected by the
league's head coaches. Coaches were not permitted to vote for
their own players.
