USC Aiken's Three-Game Winning Streak Ends in Narrow Loss to Henderson State

PENSACOLA, Fla. – The University of South Carolina Aiken women's basketball team saw its three-game winning streak come to an end in a narrow 62-57 loss to Henderson State in the Pacers' final game of the 2010 West Florida Thanksgiving Classic at the UWF Field House.

The loss dropped the Pacers to 5-2 on the 2010-11 season. Henderson State improved to 5-1 on the year with its five-point win over USC Aiken.

The Pacers were up by as many as three points in the first half, but Henderson State closed out the first half owning a five-point 31-26 lead.

The two teams stayed close in the opening ten minutes of the second stanza, but the Pacers had come back to tie the game at 40-40 after a Nakia Pinkney (Orangeburg, S.C./Orangeburg-Wilkinson) jumper with 9:33 remaining in the second half.

After a turnover by Henderson State, USC Aiken garnered the lead at 42-40 after a Deandra Schirmer (Holton, Kan./Cloud County) lay-up with 9:22 remaining.

The Pacers would hold the lead once more, but Henderson State would go up by as many as seven down the stretch to acquire the victory.

Hannah DeGraffinreed (Raleigh, N.C./Merrimack) guided the Pacers on Saturday with a double-double. DeGraffinreed secured 11 points and 11 rebounds. She also had three assists, two steals and a block.

Schirmer and Kayla Harris (Raleigh, N.C./Wakefield) were the top scorers for USC Aiken, finishing with 14 points each.

Giana Woods and Nyesha Adams led Henderson State with 13 points each. Woods had a double-double as she also secured 14 rebounds.

As a team, USC Aiken shot 32.2 percent, while Henderson State shot a collective 36 percent as a team.

The Pacers have just one day off before next returning to the hardwood for its first home game of the 2010-11 season against Lenoir-Rhyne at 7 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 29. The game features a special Lady Pacer Meet and Greet event immediately following the conclusion of the contest.
