Box Score NEWBERRY, S.C. – The University of South Carolina Aiken volleyball team continued to stretch out their current winning streak to seven matches as the Pacers claimed their non-conference match 3-1 over the Wolves of South Atlantic Conference foe Newberry College at Eleazer Arena Wednesday night.
USC Aiken claimed the first and third sets 25-18 with Newberry taking the second set 25-22. The Pacers were able to finish strong in the fourth set with a 25-20 victory to claim the match.
With their season-high seventh win in a row, the Pacers now find themselves 14-11 overall for the 2010 campaign while Newberry falls to an even 13-13.
Sophomore slugger Shannon Byers (Morristown, Minn./Faribault), who entered the match averaging a double-double for the season at 11.12 kills and 10.25 digs per match, recorded a match-high 12 terminations and was just one dig away from claiming another double-double as she had nine digs. Junior Chelsey Kight (Charleston, S.C./West Ashley) was not too far behind as she recorded her best match of the season with nine kills.
The towering duo of Lindsay Mortenson (Aliso Viejo, Calif./Santa Margarita) and Emily Maassen (Ellisville, Mo./Marquette) each chipped in seven terminations with Mortenson recording seven blocking assists.
Sophomore libero Samantha Lukralle (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst) broke 500 digs for the season as she corralled in a match-high 29 digs to give her 507 on the season. Lukralle now sits just 16 digs shy of the school record for most digs in a season that she set last season as a freshman.
The sophomore setting duo of Ashley Farwell (Wake Forest, N.C./Wake Forest Rolesville) and Alex Petock (Woodbridge, Va./Woodbridge) both just missed out on a double-double as Farwell had 21 assists and seven digs and Petock added 18 assists and seven digs of her own.
Newberry was led in their attack by Sarah Scott as she recorded nine kills with Kara Harris and Katie Davenport not too far behind with eight terminations each.
The Pacer defense proved to be a formidable force as USC Aiken recorded 14 total team blocks compared to Newberry's five total blocks holding Newberry to a hitting percentage of just .034.
USC Aiken will head home for their last three home Peach Belt Conference matches of the 2010 campaign before ending their season on the road. The Pacers will first welcome the Saints of current PBC No. 1 Flagler College on Friday, Oct. 29 for a 7 p.m. league match in the Convocation Center before the Pirates of Armstrong Atlantic State sail into town on Saturday, Oct. 30 for the Pacers' senior night.
