AIKEN, S.C. – The University of South Carolina Aiken
volleyball team ended their final home tournament of the 2010
season with a perfect 3-0 record. The Pacers closed the curtains on
the 2010 Pacer Volleyball Invitational on Saturday with two 3-0
wins in the Convocation Center to extend their season-high winning
streak to six straight matches en route to improving to 13-11 on
the season.
In the first match of the day, the Pacers only allowed 17 kills
and recorded 11 team service aces to down the Senators of Davis
& Elkins (9-16) in three-straight sets on the main arena floor.
The Pacers took the three-set match 25-15, 25-17 and capped their
session with a 25-16 final set.
Freshman lefty Emily Maassen
(Ellisville, Mo./Marquette) led all attackers in the match with
nine kills while hitting an impressive .583. In total, eight Pacers
recorded multiple terminations with sophomore Shannon Byers
(Morristown, Minn./Faribault) close behind Maassen with seven kills
and three service aces which was good enough to tie fellow
sophomore Claire Patten
(Boulder, Colo./Mercer) for most aces in the match.
The Senators' Lindsay Russo and Heather Zapf led Davis &
Elkins in terminations with four a piece.
USC Aiken controlled every aspect of the game out hitting the
Senators .260-.085 while recording 40 total team kills to Davis
& Elkins' 17.
The Pacers then backed up their early afternoon efforts by
taming the Cobras of region foe Coker College (2-21) in another
three-set match highlighted by USC Aiken dishing out 16 total team
service aces. USC Aiken won all three sets by at least 10 points
going 25-15, 25-14 and 25-13.
Once again, it was a freshman leading the Pacer charge as Leah
Rodgers (Longwood, Fla./Lake Mary) recorded a match-high 10
terminations against the Cobras. Byers was not too far behind as
she knocked down nine kills of her own.
Sophomore libero Samantha
Lukralle (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst) set a second school
record, this time for service aces, eclipsing the previous record
of nine service aces in a single match with 10 service aces in the
match with Coker. Lukralle recorded a team-high 12 aces in
Saturday's two matches.
USC Aiken as a team hit an impressive .392 while holding the
Cobras to a hitting percentage of .105.
USC Aiken will load up the bus on Wednesday, Oct. 27 as they
head up to Newberry, S.C. for their final non-conference match of
the regular season against the Newberry Wolves before returning to
Aiken for three tough home conference matches within the friendly
confines of the Convocation Center. The match with the Wolves is
scheduled to get under way at 7 p.m.
