USC Aiken Volleyball Perfect in Final Home Tournament

AIKEN, S.C. – The University of South Carolina Aiken volleyball team ended their final home tournament of the 2010 season with a perfect 3-0 record. The Pacers closed the curtains on the 2010 Pacer Volleyball Invitational on Saturday with two 3-0 wins in the Convocation Center to extend their season-high winning streak to six straight matches en route to improving to 13-11 on the season.

In the first match of the day, the Pacers only allowed 17 kills and recorded 11 team service aces to down the Senators of Davis & Elkins (9-16) in three-straight sets on the main arena floor. The Pacers took the three-set match 25-15, 25-17 and capped their session with a 25-16 final set.

Freshman lefty Emily Maassen (Ellisville, Mo./Marquette) led all attackers in the match with nine kills while hitting an impressive .583. In total, eight Pacers recorded multiple terminations with sophomore Shannon Byers (Morristown, Minn./Faribault) close behind Maassen with seven kills and three service aces which was good enough to tie fellow sophomore Claire Patten (Boulder, Colo./Mercer) for most aces in the match.

The Senators' Lindsay Russo and Heather Zapf led Davis & Elkins in terminations with four a piece.

USC Aiken controlled every aspect of the game out hitting the Senators .260-.085 while recording 40 total team kills to Davis & Elkins' 17.

The Pacers then backed up their early afternoon efforts by taming the Cobras of region foe Coker College (2-21) in another three-set match highlighted by USC Aiken dishing out 16 total team service aces. USC Aiken won all three sets by at least 10 points going 25-15, 25-14 and 25-13.

Once again, it was a freshman leading the Pacer charge as Leah Rodgers (Longwood, Fla./Lake Mary) recorded a match-high 10 terminations against the Cobras. Byers was not too far behind as she knocked down nine kills of her own.

Sophomore libero Samantha Lukralle (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst) set a second school record, this time for service aces, eclipsing the previous record of nine service aces in a single match with 10 service aces in the match with Coker. Lukralle recorded a team-high 12 aces in Saturday's two matches.

USC Aiken as a team hit an impressive .392 while holding the Cobras to a hitting percentage of .105.

USC Aiken will load up the bus on Wednesday, Oct. 27 as they head up to Newberry, S.C. for their final non-conference match of the regular season against the Newberry Wolves before returning to Aiken for three tough home conference matches within the friendly confines of the Convocation Center. The match with the Wolves is scheduled to get under way at 7 p.m.
