Box Score AIKEN, S.C. – Two second-half goals lifted the University
of South Carolina Aiken women's soccer team over the Wolves
of Newberry 2-0 in non-conference action at the "Pacer
Pit" Wednesday evening.
With their second win in a row, the Pacers improve to 4-10-1
overall for the 2010 campaign while Newberry falls to 3-11 for the
2010 season.
The game passed into the second half scoreless as neither team
was able to find the back of the net until Madeline Fellabom (Mount
Pleasant, S.C./Wando) scored off a penalty kick in the 82nd minute
to put USC Aiken ahead 1-0 with just under 10 minutes left in
regulation.
The Pacers kept the pressure on the Wolves in the waning
moments, looking for one more goal to put the match out of
Newberry's reach.
USC Aiken found just that in the 88th minute when
Newberry's netminder advanced out from between the pipes just
enough to allow Alex Cohen to set up Katie Rumble for her third
goal of the season. Cohen (Evans, Ga./Greenbrier) sent a soft shot
just past the goalkeeper towards goal giving Rumble (Aiken,
S.C./South Aiken) an empty net to chip the ball into putting the
Pacers up 2-0.
USC Aiken was able to claim the win despite being out shot by
Newberry 16-9. The Pacers' freshmen netminders Alli Edens
(Lexington, S.C./College of Charleston) and Melissa Westphal
(Springfield, Va./Paul VI) combined for the shut out with eight
total saves.
USC Aiken's next match will be a Peach Belt Conference
road-tilt in Americus, Ga. against Georgia Southwestern on
Saturday, Oct. 23. The Pacers and Hurricanes will take to the pitch
at 1 p.m.
