Box Score FLORENCE, S.C. – Down 2-1 heading into the fourth set, the
USC Aiken volleyball team fought from behind to break a four-match
losing streak and earn an important 3-2 Peach Belt Conference
victory over league foe Francis Marion Friday night. The five-set
match broke a string of five straight matches in which the Patriots
won or loss in just three straight sets, having won their last
three matches 3-0.
The Pacers raced out to an impressive 25-15 win in the first set,
but the Patriots reined them in winning the second set 25-20 and
the third set 25-22. USC Aiken was able to regain their stride to
finish strong with a 25-20 win in the fourth set and a 15-11 win in
the fifth set to claim the match and sweep the Patriots for the
season.
With the five-set win, the Pacers improve to 8-11 overall for the
2010 campaign and are now 5-4 in league action while the Patriots
are now 13-8 overall and 3-5 in PBC play.
Seven different players recorded multiple kills for USC Aiken which
tallied 50 total kills as a team in the contest. Sophomore Shannon
Byers (Morristown, Minn./Faribault) and freshman Emily Maassen
(Ellisville, Mo./Marguette) both recorded a match-high 14
terminations in the match with Byers earning her eighth
double-double of the 2010 campaign adding 19 digs on defense.
Senior Megan Disney (Knoxville, Tenn./Karns) served up three aces
to go along with her seven kills and three blocks while setter
Ashley Farwell (Wake Forest, N.C./Wake Forest Rolesville) set up 26
assists to go along with 14 digs for her fifth double double of the
season. Sophomore Samantha Lukralle (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst)
continued to work towards besting the record for most digs in a
season she set last season as a freshman as she led USC
Aiken's back row with 29 digs.
Francis Marion's Riley Forester had a team-high 12 kills and
Mallory Eggert was close behind with 11 terminations of her own
while Nicole Bennett earned a double-double with 16 digs and a
match-high 43 assists.
USC Aiken found something they liked in Francis Marion's
serve receive as the Pacers recorded a stout 10 service aces in the
match.
USC Aiken will now travel up to the Tar Heel state to take on PBC
foe UNC Pembroke and non-conference opponent Elizabeth City State
in Pembroke, N.C. on Saturday, Oct. 16. The Pacers will first take
on the Braves in a PBC match at 11 a.m. before battling the Vikings
shortly after at 1 p.m.
