AIKEN, S.C. - University of South Carolina Aiken men's
basketball player Sterling Council was selected as the USC Aiken
Athletic Department Student-Athlete of the Week on January 31,
2010.
Council (Camden, S.C./Camden) firmly etched his name in the USC
Aiken-Augusta State rivalry annals last week when he hit a
game-winning jumper and the USC Aiken Pacers rallied from a
10-point halftime deficit to defeat sixth-ranked Augusta State on
Monday, Jan. 25 before a crowd of 3,298 at the Convocation Center.
On a play that was not originally drawn for him during the time
out, Council calmly and collectively dribbled around the perimeter
before knocking down a jumper from the right corner with 10 seconds
left in the game.
The Jaguars would turn the ball over once again on their next
possession with Byron Faison (Sumter, S.C./Winthrop) taking
advantage of a Fred Braithwaite miscue. Faison was then fouled by
Greg Hire. Faison proficiently drained his two free throw attempts
to leave the Pacers with a three-point 71-68 victory.
The game-winning jumper was the second of the year for Council,
who also sank a 17-foot jumper with seven-tenths of a second left
on the game clock in USC Aiken's season-opening overtime victory
over NAIA 23rd-ranked Life.
Overall, Council was 6-for-11 from the field en route to a
team-best 15 points in the Pacer win over nationally-ranked Augusta
State. He also had three assists and four steals.
The 15 points tied a career high he originally set in USC
Aiken's home win over Flagler.
Council has scored in double figures six times in the 2009-10
season. The Pacer point guard has dished out three or more assists
in 12 games.
The USC Aiken Student Athlete of the Week award is a newly
created award for the 2009-10 athletic year. Each week the USC
Aiken athletic department is going to honor one individual from an
in-season sport for their hard work and effort.
