Cedeno Sets Pacers Up for Pivotal Region Win Over Catawba

USC Aiken 3, Catawba 1 - Game Two on Saturday

AIKEN, S.C. - Lauren Cedeno finished with six kills, 37 assists and 15 digs to lead the University of South Carolina Aiken volleyball team to an important regional non-conference 3-1 victory over the South Atlantic Conference's Catawba on Saturday afternoon.

The four-match victory over Catawba (25-20, 15-25, 25-18, 25-19) came in USC Aiken's final match of the 2009 USCA Volleyball Invitational at the Convocation Center on the campus of USC Aiken. The Pacers concluded the event 2-1, earning victories over Catawba and St. Andrews. USC Aiken's lone loss in the event came at the hands of Florida Tech, who ended the invitational a perfect 4-0.

Cedeno (Jacksonville, Fla./Bishop Kenny) was the Pacers' lone setter in the win over the Indians. The 37 assists by Cedeno in the match were a season-high.  She also had one block in the match.

Pacer libero Samantha Lukralle (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst) concluded the pivotal victory over Catawba with 13 digs. She also had two service aces.

Chelsey Kight (Charleston, S.C./West Ashley) and Lindsay Mortenson (Aliso Viejo, Calif./Santa Margarita Catholic) led USC Aiken in the match in kills. Kight had 11 kills, while Mortenson ended the match with 10 kills. Mortenson also had four blocks in the match, including one solo block.

Catawba was led in its loss to the Pacers by Shay Meeks' 10 kills. Catawba setter Megan Courson collected 24 assists, while Indian libero Mai Zoua Lo finished the match with a team-best 12 digs.

The match began with USC Aiken easily taking the 25-20 victory in game one. The Pacers would hit just .107 in the second game to allow the Indians back in the match at 1-1.

USC Aiken regrouped after the 10-minute break in between games two and three to capture the next two games and the crucial region victory. USC Aiken hit an impressive .481 in game three and .406 in game four to obtain the four-match victory.

The regular season tournament portion of the 2009 Pacer campaign concludes next weekend at the Limestone Tournament in Gaffney, S.C. 

Florida Tech 3, USC Aiken 0 - Game One on Saturday

AIKEN, S.C. - The University of South Carolina Aiken volleyball team despite 11 kills each by Lindsay Mortenson and Shannon Byers fell 3-0 (25-20, 25-23, 25-21) to Florida Tech on Saturday morning during its second match of the 2009 USCA Volleyball Invitational.

Florida Tech began the match by taking the 25-20 victory in game one. The Pacers were able to regroup in game two and take a commanding nine-point lead in the game. The Panthers would not let the Pacer advantage last, rallying towards a two-point 25-23 victory over USC Aiken in the second game.

Florida Tech claimed a 25-21 victory in game three to pick up the three-game win that helped them remain a perfect 3-0 in the USCA Volleyball Invitational.

The loss drops the Pacers to an even 3-3 on the 2009 season, while Florida Tech improved to 5-2 on the year with the victory.

Mortenson (Aliso Viejo, Calif./Santa Margarita Catholic) and Byers (Morristown, Minn./Faribault) both led the Pacers with the 11 kills, but sophomore Jessica Loper (McDonough, Ga./Eagles Landing Christian) was not far behind with seven kills. USC Aiken had a total of 42 kills in the match.

Lauren Cedeno (Jacksonville, Fla./Bishop Kenny) led the Pacers with 23 assists, while Byers ended the match with 12 digs. Pacer libero Samantha Lukralle (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst) led the Pacers with 23 digs.

Amy O'Brien led Florida Tech in the match with 15 digs. Shelby DeNeice finished just behind her with 14 digs. DeNeice was second on the Panthers in the match with eight kills. Janelle Branch paced the Panthers with nine kills.
