Pacers Finish Limestone Southeast Crossover Tournament at Perfect 4-0

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

GAFFNEY, S.C. - The University of South Carolina Aiken volleyball team swept both of its matches on Saturday to finish the 2009 Limestone Southeast Crossover Tournament at the Timken Center with a perfect 4-0 record.

A champion is not declared in the regular season tournament, but the Pacers were the only team in the Southeast Crossover Tournament to finish the event undefeated.

USC Aiken easily downed perennially tough South Atlantic Conference program Lenoir-Rhyne in its opener on Saturday morning, defeating the Bears 3-0 (25-17, 25-20, 25-15). In the Pacers' final match of the day, USC Aiken rebounded from a nine-point loss in the first game to best Mount Olive College 3-1 (16-25, 25-17. 26-24 25-15) in its final match of the day.

The score 1-1 in the latter points of the third game of the Mount Olive match, USC Aiken's Megan Disney (Knoxville, Tenn./Karns) took over the third match, collecting some crucial kills to lead the Pacers to a 26-24 victory in the third game. USC Aiken would easily win game four to take the 3-1 victory.

USC Aiken ends the Southeast Crossover Tournament in the midst of a five-match winning streak dating back to its victory over Catawba in its final match of the 2009 USCA Volleyball Invitational at the Convocation Center last weekend.

Disney led the Pacers in the win over Lenoir-Rhyne with 11 kills. She was the only Pacer with double-digit kills in the match with sophomores Chelsey Kight (Charleston, S.C./West Ashley) and Jessica Loper (McDonough, Ga./Eagles Landing Christian) right behind her in kills in the game with seven kills each.

The Pacers for the most part returned to their two setter system in the Southeast Crossover, meaning that Lauren Cedeno (Jacksonville, Fla./West Georgia) and Whitney Tabbert (Stewardson, Ill./Stewardson-Strasburg) both had multiple assists in the Pacers' victories on Saturday. Cedeno had 23 assists in the Mount Olive match and 21 in the L-R match. Tabbert concluded her day on Saturday with 15 assists in the Mount Olive match and 10 in the L-R match.

Pacer freshman libero Samantha Lukralle (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst) led the Pacers in digs on the day with a combined 22. Lukralle collected 12 digs in the Mount Olive match and 10 in the L-R match. Shannon Byers (Morristown, Minn./Faribault) led all Pacers on the day with 17 digs in the win over Mount Olive.

In addition to the pivotal kills in the Mount Olive game, Disney finished with six blocks in the win over Mount Olive. Loper had eight total blocks on the day with four in both matches. Lindsay Mortenson (Aliso Viejo, Calif./Santa Margarita Catholic) ended the Mount Olive match with four blocks.

USC Aiken ends the tournament portion of its regular season with an 8-3 record.

The Pacers next commence the Peach Belt Conference season at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 16 against proximity rival Lander in Greenwood, S.C. USC Aiken has won 10 of the last 12 matches between the two and holds a 19-4 advantage all-time over the Bearcats.

Just two days later, USC Aiken will host its first PBC home regular season match of the year at 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 18 against new PBC member Flagler. USC Aiken will once again host a league match just one day later against Armstrong Atlantic State at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 19.
